Just a neat stat I saw the other day. Maybe it puts Bedard into better light in the midst of his sophomore slump he's having. But either way, no one else has done it since 2000. And to be honest, I am trying to think of the players that did do this ever. It is likely that Celebrini joins them in this group next year.

But Patrick Kane didn't do it as he turned 20 in the fall of 2008. He did accomplish this in his first two seasons, but he wasn't still a teenager. Going back to the early 1990s and while Jagr turned 20 in February of 1992 he didn't do it either, nor in his first two full seasons as he was turning 20. So my thought is who did this in the 1980s.

Gretzky as always is the obvious answer here. He did it in his first season alone. But he's always the exception. So by my count the only other players in NHL history to do this other than Crosby, Bedard and Gretzky are: Hawerchuk, Francis, Yzerman and Turgeon. That's it. Because who else is there? Who enters the NHL at 18 and scores right away like that? No one in the 1970s simply because the draft was at 20 years old then. Gilbert Perreault I am sure is on people's minds, but he obviously wasn't in the NHL at 18. Bobby Hull is actually surprisingly close to this, if you look at his first two seasons. But he did turn 20 in January of 1959 so even then it wouldn't count. Stamkos had an early birthday where he turned 20 too, but even his first two seasons he doesn't have the assists. Thornton, Lecavalier, MacKinnon, just didn't have as good as first two seasons as Bedard has had. Malkin was 19 when he entered the NHL.

So yeah, I am counting 7 players in NHL history that have done this, and despite a lot of criticism his way one of them is Bedard.

Yeah this stat basically favours players who are near the end of the cutoff for draft eligibility… like Bedard.

2 months younger and he would have been drafted a year later and not hit these totals by the time he’s 20. Not many players get to play 2 full seasons before they’re 20.

Time will tell.

If he doesn't Nolan Patrick he should be just fine. Maybe won't belong in the mentioned category but still dominant.
He would need to put up 115 pts in his first 95 career games or something, he's going to turn 20 a few months into his sophomore season.

Crosby and bedard each had 2 full sesons before they turned 20. Not impossible, but it will be much harder for Mckenna do to this completely arbitrary and useless thing

NHL Most Points Before Turning 20 | StatMuse says that Jimmy Carson, Phil Housley, Eddie Olczyk have also done that.

It's but a trivia answer and correlates with the player very superficially. Before turning 20, Andrei Svechnikov had 2 fewer points than Mario Lemieux. PPG stats before 20 are much more telling.

Crosby literally had twice as many points as Bedard at 19 lol.

Can we please stop putting them in the same sentences?

Clayton Keller is probably a better comparable at this point.
Crosby also had more than twice the points as McDavid before 20. Bedard isn’t following generational talent trajectory at the moment but a lot can change in the early 20s.

I'm talking about in their 19 year old seasons.

19 y/o Crosby had 120 points - Art Ross
19 y/o McDavid had 100 points - Art Ross

19 y/o Bedard has 59 points, and is 70th in league scoring.

Part of being generational is dominating the league as a teenager.

Each of the 4 truly generational forwards of the last 50 years took the league by storm as teens (99, 66, 87, and 97).

Bedard's 19 year old season ranks 53rd all time in terms if ppg (>40gp).

As you can see, he's still in great company for the most part.

At this stage idk if Bedard will ever be a better player than Keller. I really think Keller is underrated.

It wouldn't shock me. Keller has carried that team for years. Both guys came into the league on really limited offensive teams, but Keller's 19 year old season is for sure more impressive IMO. He finished 48th in scoring and led his team in goals, points, ES goals and ES points.

As bad as Chicago is, the 2017-18 Coyotes were worse offensively and lower in the standings.

They're pretty similar players honestly. Smaller handsy guys who are average skaters but elite playmakers. Bedard's shot is better, but Keller is better at making time and space for himself, and is probably a bit faster.

I know for sure the idea wasn't to lump Bedard with Crosby because I think it seems obvious he is already off Sid's pace. What I was trying to show was that with all the heat Bedard gets he has done something only one other player has done since the 1980s. I think that's impressive personally.

Nice find. Eddie O? Wouldn't have guessed without looking that up.
