Yes I know that +/- isn't be all end all but to me this stat is crazy.

So far through the playoffs:

Dallas has only 3 players that are +...and they're each +1. The whole team on a per player basis....all players are -56

The Oilers have only 1 player that is a -....he played 1 game and is -2. The whole team on a per player basis....+75

The Oilers have played 2 less games and their players have a combined +73.....Dallas is -53

How is that even possible?

The Stars haven't done well when they've pulled their goalie. They scored zero goals, and allowed five, with their goalie pulled. That's -30 right there.

They also have 12 PP goals, which easily ranks them first (and players don't get a plus for powerplay goals). In fact, Dallas allowed 2 shorthanded goals. That still gives their powerplay the best goal differential in the playoffs (+10), but they get zero plusses for the goals they scored, and they get -10 for the two shorthanded goals they allowed.

(The other observation is, when Dallas loses, they lose big. They've lost five games. All five of them were 3+ goal losses, and four of them were 4+ goal losses. In contrast, four of their wins were by 1 goal, and two of their wins were by two goals. Dallas has won all six games decided by one or two goals. They're either very "clutch", or very lucky. That also explains the result - if you win a lot of close games, and lose a lot of blowouts, the team will have a winning record, despite having a negative goal differential).

Oilers need to bring those jerseys back the ones with the same logo as your pfp

And even with this disparity the Stars will dispatch the Oilers.

Dallas is a great team that has underperformed through the first two rounds. Potentially one of the least impressive WCF runs of the last decade+.

That said, lots of talent on the team that nobody would be surprised to see flip a switch.

Those things are heinous.

Few color combos in sports are more iconic and distinctive than EDM’s blue and orange, so let’s switch that to grayscale and change the logo to something that looks like an offbrand marvel character would use

Took the words right out of my mouth. Except this would not be my pitch

Also Dallas had to play vs Colorado and Winnipeg, the President trophy winners.
Edmonton played LA and Vegas. Granted the Knights are good but both Colorado and Winnipeg are better than them.

That's the common narrative, but it's not so. Colorado without Rantanen is not a contender. Winnipeg gets no goaltending from Hellebuyck in the playoffs, so aren't a contender either. LA and Vegas could have easily taken out both teams had they met.

This is great analysis. Thank you for putting this together and not just spouting random nonsense like most people.

I already said it in another thread but Dallas has played about as bad as they can play while beating Colorado and Winnipeg.

One of two things will happen this series. Duchene, Robertson, Johnston, Benn, Marchment, Dadonov, Seguin, and Hintz will find their game and Dallas will win. Or they will continue to underperform and Edmonton will win. Oettinger, the pk, and Mikko can't carry them another series imo.

If Dallas catches fire and finds their game, then look out. I think Dallas on their A game is better than Edmonton on their A game. But Dallas will lose in 5 if they continue to play their C game.

I'm hoping the multiple days off helps Robertson get closer to 100%.

One team gets no power plays and is winning at EV.

The other team are getting caved at EV and are power play merchants.

I think it’s pretty obvious who’s who ;)

In a strange departure from previous years the Oilers have been dominant at 5v5 and putrid on special teams. Their challenge is going to be keeping up the 5v5 play and figure their special teams out on the fly

Kind of the opposite of last season:
  • Dallas special teams are carrying them
  • Edmonton is the deeper team

What is their PP / PK goal differential?

Oilers are -5, while Stars are +4. So that will explain some of it.

Looking at even strength goals, Oilers are +14 and Stars -8. 5on5, Oilers +8, Stars -2.

But yeah, Dallas has been very "win the right games" thus far.

The Kings had the best record in the league for the last half of the season and the second fewest goals against all season, they finished 1 point behind the Stars who are considered a Cup favorites but since the Oilers took out the Kings they're just some garbage team now.

Very simple. Close wins, blowout losses, lots of power play goals for and a couple shorties against, along with a bunch of empty netters against. Bada bing bada boom.

I'm an Oiler fan, but playing Colorado vs playing the Kings might have a part to play in this, ha ha.

Edmonton has made short work of the Kings (aside from the first 2 games) and the Knights. The Stars' series have not been one sided at all.
