Craig Button's top-75 for 2013 NHL draft (March 4th)

Nichushkin is easily a top 5 talent at worst but remember Craig is not predicting the draft results, it's simply his rankings.

I think I will be chatting with Craig about Owen Sound prospects next time we speak. Much different than our HP rankings on the Attack players. ;) I always enjoy our player chats.

I see more than 5 "top 5" talents in this draft however.

Hell, if the Flyers can get Ristolainen, I'd take him over Pulock. Once again (and not surprisingly), some of Button's rankings baffle me. But to each his own.

Flames could be anywhere from 4-16 IMO.

Guys I am most interested in are Barkov, Monahan, Lindhom, Pulock.

I have a feeling some team will end of drafting Wennberg around 13-15, and walk away with the steal of the draft. Very intelligent player.

I love reading these more than anyone but we all know that 99.9999999% of the people posting have no clue and watch youtube and read pro scouts rankings. Its fun to guess and mess with but for the majority and I mean mass majority we are all just giving educated guests. I have never seen Mackinon or Drounin Live. But have seen Jones. And I just can't see Jones being a great first overall pick. Something about him screams Erik Johnson to me. But then like I said thats just a hunch I am no pro scout.

If the Oilers keep ******** the bed (likely) I want one of Jones, Barkov, Monahan depending on where we're selecting. If we somehow put it together and become a bubble team, seems like Lazar would be our guy.

Where are those guys going to fit? I think the Oilers need more D, if anything.

The majority of Oilers fans want to add some size on the second line by replacing Gagner with a guy like Barkov, Monahan or Lazar.

I definitely wouldn't be adverse to taking Jones or Nurse with our 1st though.

Other than the players in the top 5, everyone else is all over the board. Button is the only guy I know that puts Fucale in the top 10. Everyone else has him either late first round or early second round. I actully think Fucale will go between 16-22. There are just too many good players to go before him. Any team that picks him earlier than that much be doing it out of desperation for a netminder..but I think this draft will go BPA for each team.

Ottawa needs to pick the BPA this draft, I think they pick somewhere between 11 and 20, looks to be a lot of good talent there.

I think Wennberg would be a perfect pick for Ottawa. God knows they love their Swede's, and it's worked out for them!! That being said, Wennberg is capable of playing the 3 forward positions strongly allowing him to be a possible replacement for Alfie when he decides to hang 'em up. Keep in mind he'd be competing with Silfverberg for the spot, but even if Silfverberg gets it, Wennberg can still be moved to the left wing.

I could see Wennberg being a great fit in Ottawa with all your Swedes. Unless Ottawa starts to decline, and fall out of the top-8, I doubt they would have a chance to pick him.

Very versatile player, who should be in the 8 - 14 range.

Wennberg can play center aswell. He is very good at the face-off dot.

Wow, Zadorov listed a 6'5 230lb. When I saw him a WJC looked like he was 6'2 about 180lb, he looked lanky. As a Leafs fan if Mantha, Erne, or Wennberg are gone I would take Zadorov even with our D depth.

Yeah, but I don't see him replacing Spezza or Turris anytime soon and he's better than a 3rd liner. With the Left Wing, I think Michalek is at the top followed by Latendresse which I'd say is a heck of a lot easier to jump over.

A group of us did a mock draft at the end of January, and I took Zadorov 15th for the Leafs... Something about the various combos of Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Reilly, Finn, Gardiner, Franson, Costco, Holzer, Liles, Percy, and Zadorov is just heavenly to me.

Erne went 14th, Mantha 17th, and Wennberg 32nd.

You didn't see Zadorov at the WJHC because he didn't play. Unless you mean the u-18s??

I would willing to put some money on it, but if Lazar is picked out of the top 15 he will be the steal of the draft in the next 5 years. I really want the Oilers to draft him.

Leafs Director of Scouting Dave Morrison lives in London. ;)

I spoke to Zadorov after a game last week. I liked him, he was well spoken and had a good grasp of himself as a player. He is loving the OHL.

I get your point and agree - I guess I will just leave it that we have him ranked 4th and that includes a grouping of more than 5 "top 5" talents.
;)

And I don't disagree that he's top 5 talent, but with Monahan and Lindholm being pretty close to top 5 talent as well, there's no way I'd use a top 5 pick on Nichushkin. Put it this way, forget that you are doing a website player ranking, and instead pretend you are a GM of an actual NHL team. Are you willing to take Nichushkin at 4 or 5 over Barkov, Monahan or Lindholm given the contract issues? I'm not.

Top 5 talent is a relative term, and is somewhat arbitary term. First of all, often the difference between the "5th talent" and the "6th talent" can be neglible, and need defined.

Secondly, this "Top 5 talent" is relative to whom is available in your draft year. Extrapolating it to previous draft years, and the meaning of it in those years is useless. Whatever the top tier talent available in the preceeding year was is irrelevant, it is about the top tier talent available this year. So saying random player is a top five talent, but that he won't go in the top 5 because there are 5 better players is entirely contradictory ; if in his environment, there are 5 better players, he is not a top 5 talent.

Tiered groups is as a rule a better measurement than an cut off at an arbitary number (Top 5, Top 10 etc).
