So we were apparently very close to getting O'Reilly the day before we got Cozens but the trade fell through in final stages.

Which begs the question, whom would you have preferred. Let's keep this civil and just for fun conversation's sake.

For a win now situation O'Reilly
Yeah, O'Reilly is currently a better player, and has the better cap hit, if we're talking this year and next, it's him.

Cozens though, just turned 24. To put that in perspective we traded Zibanejad at 23, and he really took off at 25-26.

I look at this trade as change of scenery trade for Cozens, it's a reset for him and opportunity to find his game. If he does, it's a huge win for us.

Cozens because I don’t think we were ever going to win this year or next. I prefer a young player that can hopefully grow with the team.

Staios might have preferred O’Reilly if it’s true they had a deal that broke down though, because when Staios was asked if the Cozens trade had started up recently he said no and that they’d had discussions for awhile. So putting it together it would appear he’d have gone with O’Reilly over Cozens given the choice.

If we were rebuilding after this season I'd pick O'Reilly.

Otherwise, it's got to be Cozens.

We already have one Giroux in the top 6.

All depends on what's going back. If it's the same trade, hell no to O'Reilly. If we're giving up a Zetterlund return then maybe. But it wouldn't even work in that case.

It's not so much a matter of which player to choose, the terms are also critical. O'Reilly is a win now add and we're not in a position to risk our future. Especially for a position not in need and a former Lady Byng winner.

Adding him next year for free, sure why not

It was around Norris too according to Bruce. Nashville and Vancouver were both interested.

We probably offered Norris for Miller but he said no. Then we tried Norris for O’Reilly and he also said no. So we went with Cozens.

It was Norris.

Short term it would be O'Reilly. But long term I'd want Cozens. O'Rielly gives us flexibility but he can't exactly grow with this core.

I don’t know 4.5 million for Oreilly for this year and 2 more is pretty tempting. Better player. Veteran and plays the game the right way. Age and foot speed definitely a factor though. Just unloading the Norris contract would allow us to use that cap space elsewhere to improve this roster .

But if Cozens lives up to his contract then it’s an easy choice and we made the right one .

Cozens. And I am no fan of cozens

The fact that staios was trying to feel Josh for a guy like 10 years older scares the f*** out of me. There better have been some serious +++++ coming back from preds

It might also be worth factoring in that the Sens may have not ended up getting Fabian Zetterlund if they got Ryan O'Reilly. Based on pure speculation, one possibility is that the Sens would have acquired Ryan O'Reilly and Michael Bunting in a deal for Josh Norris plus some other assets. If they did do that would they still have targeted Zetterlund?

However, it might NOT have been Norris for O'Reilly.

Apparently Staios had reached out to Grier 3 to 4 times to try to pry Zetterlund from SJ and he finally caved.

O’Reilly would’ve been nice from a cap flexibility, but otherwise for this team now and the future the additions of 24 year old Cozens and 25 year old Zetterlund appear to be a better investment.

That said, O’Reilly is still a 2-way beast, more a rental for a deep playoff run but I think the Sens are always getting better with Pinto, Greig, and Stutzle all committing to 2-way hockey. Cozens is of similar ilk and Zetterlund is a 200-ft hockey player as well.

I am good with Cozens over O’Reilly as I am optimistic about Cozens performing better than he has shown in Buffalo.

I would’ve been pissed if we traded Norris for ROR. We aren’t a ROR away from being a cup contender. Cozens can grow with this young team.

I'm accepting that management wanted out from under Norris' contract and any deal was done with that motivation. I'm just glad we got a piece with some potential back and he wasn't just a dump for crap like Soucy and Hoglander. If O'Reilly had been the guy, I think more would have come with him and they'd have been fine in the short term, maybe even better, but I prefer the long term play of Cozens and the Whitehorse connection.

What was the prospective deal? Couldn't be norris for an old player, that's not good.

And 33 is old, like it or not
