I'm really hoping this is the start of a turnaround but I'm also really sick of AZ being the fantasy team in your league whose owner gave up after game 3 only to faciliate trades to his friends while not even bothering to set his roster

I'm really hoping this is the start of a turnaround but I'm also really sick of AZ being the fantasy team in your league whose owner gave up after game 3 only to faciliate trades to his friends while not even bothering to set his roster

The Coyotes have failed due to never actually allowing a full rebuild to be seen to completion. Impatience mixed with not drafting enough, drafting poorly, and developing badly, is what has doomed the Coyotes to oscillate between terrible and mediocre. That terrible mix if ineptitude and impatience. But now they have a plan...

In the last two off-seasons, the Coyotes have hired:

General Manager
Bill Armstrong:
STL Scout - 6yrs
STL Dir. Scouting - 8yrs
STL Asst. General Mgr - 2yrs

Scouting Director
Darryl Plandowski:
BUF Scout - 8yrs
PIT Scout - 2yrs
TBL Head Scout - 11yrs
TBL Dir. Scouting - 2yrs

Associate Scouting Director
Ryan Jankowski:
NYI Scout: 2yrs
NYI Asst. General Mgr: 5yrs
MTL Scout: 3yrs
BUF Dir. Scouting - 3yrs

Director of Scouting
Alan Hepple:
NSH Scout: 5yrs
COL Scout: 7yrs
COL Asst. Dir. Scouting: 6yrs
COL Dir. Scouting 6yrs

Head Coach
Andre Tourigny:
QMJHL GM/Head Coach: 11yrs

Team Canada U20 Head Coach: 1yr
Team Canada WC Asst Coach: 1yr
QMJHL COY: 1yr

In the last two off-seasons the Coyotes have acquired:

2021 - 1st VAN (9th overall)
2021 - 2nd CBJ (37th overall)
2021 - 2nd COL (60th overall)

2022 - 1st MTL
2022 - 1st COL
2022 - 2nd SJS
2022 - 2nd PHI
2022 - 2nd VAN
2022 - 2nd NYI

2024 - 2nd MTL
2024 - 2nd FLA

Conor Timmins (22)
Josef Korenar (23)
Dylan Guenther (18)
Josh Doan (19)
Ilya Fedotov (18)
JJ Moser (21)
Cole Hults (23)
Vladislav Kolyachonok (20)

---

They hired a bunch of really highly regarded young talent identifiers, and a bunch of really highly regarded young talent developers, and then they went out and acquired an absolutely unprecedented haul of young assets under 25 years of age. So now all of those newly hired, highly regarded young talent identifiers can locate the best young talent and all of those newly hired, highly regarded young talent developers can make sure they are brought along correctly, and progress according to plan.

^ add in returns on Kessel, Gostisbehere, and Boyd at this TDL (Likely multiple 2023 2nds and 3rds) - PLUS whatever they get for Chychrun, reportedly two blue chip young players/prospects and a 1st.

It's easy for dopes who don't pay attention to say "yeah, yeah, we've seen it all before" but we really haven't. Not if you actually look. If you have a brain and you pay attention you can spot the difference. This is nothing like anything we've seen before. The Coyotes have absolutely never restructured an entire front-office, hockey ops, and coaching staffs to SPECIFICALLY accommodate an absolutely massive rebuild, based entirely on a proven track-record of success in young talent identification and development. And while the Coyotes have traded off a bunch of old players before, they've never torn it all the way down to 24 and under, and no team has ever accumulated that massive of a haul of under 24 assets in a single year.

Anyone who thinks all of this isn't wildly unprecedented isn't paying attention. Nobody ever does this. Nobody acquires 3 1sts, 8 2nds, a handful of good prospects under 25 in a single year. Nobody replaces their GM, AGM, Coaching Staff, Scouting Staff, and Development staff in a single year, while simultaneously tearing the entire roster down to the bare studs.

They did this in 12 months time. This has been tremendously expedited and laser focused. Absolutely cut-throat and purpose-driven.

Cliff’s: 1 day prior to last draft, AZ had a bottom-3 NHL prospect pool. 1 day after this draft, they’ll have a top-3 NHL prospect pool.

Spoiler: It almost never happens that quickly.

Lesson: Those of you impatient for the Coyotes to stop being a laughing-stock should be applauding what they’ve done over the last year. They’re doing the ONLY thing they can do in order to fix this mess.

Top 3 is incorrect.

That said I like what they're doing.

Wait until there are names. I promise you will change your mind when it’s no longer hypothetical. That combined with Arizona’s lack of meaningful graduations will ensure I’m correct. But nobody will be able to see it until July. All the August lists will support me. I have zero doubt about it.

Considering how teams in the Coyotes' position will do a dance as a third team in a trade, maybe the league should simplify things and allow teams to trade cap space for picks directly

On the front page this just says "Coyotes willing to eat" before it cuts off and I'm like "well, yeah, they're carnivores..."

for
Kessel

What does Ottawa add?

Ottawa then flips Kessel to a contender at 50% (actual dollars retained is like 300k). Allows Yotes to retain on someone else to facilitate a trade.

No takers? lol

You've just described the endless Oilers rebuild perfectly too.

On Topic: I was not a fan of Ferguson when he was the Leaf's GM but he has a good track record as a scout so he's well placed in Arizona's development food chain.

Very true, this unprecedented in the NHL, but not in professional sports.

The Houston Astros in MLB did exactly what the Coyotes are attempting to do in hockey. From 2011 to 2013 the Astros tanked and lost at least 106 games per (historically bad) season(s). "After GM Jeff Luhnow took over in 2011, he completely rebuilt the team around young talent. The Astros gutted their MLB roster, refused to spend money on high-priced free agents, and focused their energies on building a young core." In 2013 their highest paid player had a salary of $1.15M and Alex Rodriguez' $29M salary was higher than the entire Houston roster.

From 2017 to present the Astros have made the playoffs all 5 seasons, won 4 divisional titles, been 2 World Series and won a WS title in 2017. Their attendance has nearly doubled over time.

The Coyotes have half-a$$ed every previous tank and found themselves continually floundering. This is different....the owner, GM and coaching staff are completely on board with the plan and as @rt pointed out they've invested heavily of scouting and development.

As a Coyote fan I have more confidence in the organization than I've ever had (which isn't saying much....I know).

Will it work?

Can't wait to find out.

The Houston Astros' radical rebuilding plan has made them a contender 2 years ahead of schedule

Should just make this an annual thread.

Remember when they were so smart for upgrading to get the pick to draft Chychrun by eating Datsyuk's contract? Now they're trying to trade Chychrun. Rinse and repeat.

Hey, trade him to the Wings and it'll be just like we drafted Chychrun.

He was a control freak and traded Rask for Raycroft. Understandable that Leafs nation hates him.

Hope he has gained some perspective since then.

For $9 million over two years? A second and third are OK. If the market dictates that Ottawa add a prospect then fine. Three assets are better than two.
There is 0% chance a measly 2nd and 3rd rounder by 2 years of cap space at $9mm. JBD is the base of that deal. And Ottawa is still adding.

Go look at the list of hires again.

Would you say that over the last decade the Lightning, Blues, Avalanche, and Maple Leafs have done a good job or a bad job at drafting and developing?

If you were starting a rebuild, would you hire the guys who ran St Louis, Colorado, and Tampa’s amateur scouting departments to help you do that? And if they took the job, would you feel nervous or confident?

Theres quality and good things happening everywhere but you’ve been a Yotes fan longer than anyone on this board and know that somehow, some way they’re gonna screw the pooch. I for one would like to see a strong team there, god know the división needs one
