Yeah it's ridiculous. A lot of fans like us have been voicing our frustration over this for a while now, lmao I was trying to explain this to Tampa fans just the other day. They think small market teams aren't getting favored and it's just a part of our imagination even though the evidence is clear as day.
It's not just small markets that are getting more favored calls. Look at the NHL giving Chara that fine for $5,000 in the 2019-20 Season and last year Matthews gets a 2 game suspension for doing the same thing. When something like that happens I think the NHL and the Department of Player Safety is afraid to make Jeremy Jacobs angry.

Using my example of the NHL not wanting to make Jacobs angry, did Zach Hyamn deserve a 2 game suspension for this hit on Charlie McAvoy in the 2018-19 Season?

Yup, Jacobs being chairman definitely makes a difference. They get away with a lot of crap, still blows my mind how Naz got suspended for both series for retaliating, but not even a penalty was called for the crap they pulled. Freddy came back from a couple concussions, got ran over by Debrusk, knee on knee Kadri, ran Marleau, no penalty or suspension or anything but the moment our guys get pissed off from getting abused and retaliate it's over.

It's not just 1 or 2 isolated incidents, we see it happen repeatedly. The Spezza suspension was literally retaliation Pionk.

Parros isn't very bright. His rational is probably that Keller cross checked up into the chin (because he's only 5'10), while Matthews was more horizontal to the jaw. It's not really any different except Matthews is 6'3 so point of contact was a few inches higher.

Rielly summed up my thoughts on most of the league and refs at the end of the Nashville game after he got high sticked.

It's not just a Leafs thing either, they're just bad all around; though it could be argued it's sometimes worse for big markets like the Leafs.

Orr really f***ed Parros up that night, probably to the point where he gets flashbacks.

For someone with an Ivy League degree, George isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

So you have the Rielly reference?

Sorry, was talking about where he called the ref an "expletive idiot."

If so, explain how Chara got away with murder every night.

He wears a Bruins jersey. Trust me, I'm not justifying their stupidity and Parros has zero consistency.

Orr really f***ed him up the night he dropped Parros, probably to the point where he gets flashbacks.

As someone who has worked at a University, I've experienced alot of people with Ivy League degrees who are idiots.

Here are two more examples of when Travis Dermott played for the Leafs and got boarded from behind, however there was no suspensions that resulted from those hits.

Compare those to what Kyle Clifford did in Game 1 last year against Tampa Bay when he got a 5:00 major for boarding, a game misconduct, and a 1 game suspension. That happened in the 1st period at the 6:59 mark.

Here are most recent suspensions when an illegal hit was done to any Maple Leafs players.

The shame with the suspension to Pionk was that Jason Spezza was also originally suspended for 6 games, which Gary Bettman reduced to 4 games.

Since this happened on Wednesday against Nashville, I wonder how much thought or maybe there was none of it since it never happened, about why Nino Niederreiter didn't get a hearing for his head shot on David Kampf?

The fact the refs missed giving him 2:00 for interference was a joke. If it was the opposite and let's say Kampf hit Niederreiter, what are the chances he would have had a hearing and have been suspended?

The abuse Matthews takes is astounding. He’s drawn as many penalties as Marchand this season, but it’s still woefully inadequate from the refs and the league. They need to protect the star players more.

I remember when the final straw in the 90’s was Lemieux getting slashed so much it finally broke his wrist. That’s when they finally started calling slashes more. Now it’s cross checks to the back and cheap shots.

Matthews feels he needs to respond when refs don’t. He is usually subdued and takes in on the chin, but the first time he does he gets suspended. Trash response from the league.

minority take here but seems like Mathews' cross check had more umph behind it. Could be because he's bigger and stronger.

Yes, it was a blind-side hit to a player who was completely unaware of the potential hit.
It was also interference as the puck had left the stick long enough for it to not be considered a regular hit on a player with the puck.

The NHL always takes hits of this nature very seriously and suspends the offenders.

Oh wait, there was an incident this Wednesday with the exact same parameters and not only was it not a penalty in game, like the Hyman hit was, but there was also no supplemental discipline?
And it was a high hit to boot, likely a hit to the head as well?

Hmm, well there goes my theory of the consistency of the NHL.

I guess we can also include the hit to the head on David Kampf by Nino Nino Niederreiter from Wednesday's game against Nashville. It should have been 2:00 for interference and you can make a case that Niederreiter should have had a hearing for an illegal check to the head. If it was the reverse and a Leafs player did that exact same hit, I'm willing to bet that would have happened.

Ya..the old -"If he really wanted to hurt people he could, he is just taller than everyone"- schtick that came from the league whenever he did shady shit. It's pretty sad.
I guess Chara's height is the reason he sucker punched Tavares as the 2nd period ended during their playoff series in 2019 and somehow Toronto didn't get a power play. At that time the Leafs were losing 2-1 and who knows what a power play could have done for them.

The league, and especially the DOPS, is broken. There's just really nothing else to say. It's not a debate. It's fact. They're ruining the integrity of their own league, and they don't care.

We should have all got together and pitched in for a computer for George for Christmas. A foggy head like his isn't very good for memorizing incidents and comparing videos with each other without some electronic help is it? That way he could stop using his VCR!

If anything, Keller's was far more dangerous because it targeted the throat. Whatever, we live with this as Leafs fans. You get used to it.
