LIVE BLOG HERE GOES:
9:03 - I say this as someone who does front end web stuff for a living: Gamecenter's UX is abysmal. I usually watch on my roommate's XBox, which is just okay, but I'm back to using the web browser version, and jeez.
9:07 - And ANOTHER thing: Anybody know why the commercials breaks on Gamecenter are sometimes local ads and sometimes that generic ice animation with complete silence? I'm guessing it has something to do with the TV rights but I haven't quite figured it out, and the minutes of silence really take me out of it.
9:08 - The one job qualification needed for Todd Walsh's job is charisma. He has no charisma.
9:11 - I'd like to meet the person writing out the sheet music to play "Jump" on the organ.
9:12 - In case you Arizonans are confused, all times are eastern time zone. The world doesn't revolve around Philadelphia, but it revolves around me, and I am watching the game from my sofa in Philadelphia.
9:13 - ACTUAL HOCKEY OBSERVATION: Hanzal has obviously taken a step forward offensively this year, but somehow his defense has, too. In particular, his stickwork (which was always a strength) would be elite even for a defenseman. If he can actually stay healthy enough to play 75ish games a year, he'll be a true number one center.
9:24 - McConnell just said that puck possession is a big part of the Coyotes' game every night. They're being outshot a full two shots per game. Of the ten teams ahead of the Coyotes in points percentage, only two others have a negative differential (Colorado and Montreal), and the Coyotes' is worse than both of them.
9:26 - Building off of that, there's a pretty strong correlation between Corsi (which includes blocked shots and shots attempts that miss the net) and winning percentage, but the Coyotes seem to subvert that trend year after year, overperforming relative to those advanced stats. I'm not sure what about their system seems to produce that anomaly, but it's been sustained for long enough that I believe it's more than a fluke.
9:35 - The secretiveness around Smith's condition tonight seems really odd to me. If he's sick, why not just say he's sick? And if he's sick, who is the backup tonight?
9:38 - Stone is going to have to diversify his game if he wants to be a legit top four defender in the NHL. Seems like other teams are getting wise to his skillset and gameplanning accordingly.
9:39 - For such a quick period, that was awfully boring, but against a high flying team like the Avalanche, that's probably a good thing.
9:41 - That said, having a competent backup goalie is a wonderful thing. Still not sure why LaBarbera stuck around for a while, but he definitely cost this team a few wins over the course of his time here, which is astounding for someone who played so little.
9:42 - Taking a break during intermission to do a little housework. Be back in a few.
10:01 - I feel like I'm the only one who complains about Michael Stone. Am I alone in thinking he's been the worst defenseman on this team this year? His shot brings an interesting dimension to this team, but it doesn't compensate for his other shortcomings.
10:03 - That said, not sure I understand why Schlemko and Murphy are killing a penalty together.
10:05 - Ribeiro maybe learns the downside of a reputation as a diver.
10:09 - Drawing penalties is an underrated skill/tendency.
10:10 - WOW. Yandle with a hell of a play there. Video game quality.
10:16 - Gamecenter cut out for a bit, but congrats to Jordan Szwarz. I don't know how many goals he's going to score in his career, but I'd bet a lot of them look like that one.
10:19 - I feel more justified in *****ing about Stone now. Unlucky bounce for sure, but that's a bad turnover regardless.
10:21 - Well, that was easy. The issues I have with Stone's play in his own zone probably apply to the entire Colorado roster. Their fall back to earth the rest of the season will be fun to watch.
10:23 - I prefer the hybrid icing to the old version, but I don't understand why they don't go full-on no-touch. It solves all the problems of hybrid and more, plus it removes a discretionary element from the officials.
10:25 - The shutout is gone, but Greiss is locked in tonight. The toughest part about being a backup goalie must be the long stretches between games and the short notice on which to prepare for a start, but Greiss has risen to the occasion (almost) every time. The rest of the team has looked a little listless for big spurts tonight, but his focus has kept things steady.
10:27 - I don't think they've looked bad or anything, but this team has another gear or two that they're not showing tonight. I'm guessing that having Morris, Doan and Smith—three of the most intense personalities on the team—is a big factor there.
10:30 - Intermission. Time for more housework.
11:02 - Back now. Got a little sidetracked between sorting LPs and looking up stats, but it doesn't look like I missed much.
11:03 - Another penalty drawn for Boedker. I think a more aggressive player would be able to power through some of these obstructions and generate more shots, but a powerplay is never a bad thing.
11:24 - Game over. Solid win given all the injuries, even if it was a bit boring at times. Thanks for reading, y'all.
