Speculation: Could Senators make a play on Stepan?

Just heard on XM radio that there is a real possibility that the Sens will make a offer sheet on Stepan.

Did anyone else hear that today and is there any way they would?

they can offer all they want but

1) stepan needs to sign it and 2) they would have to offer something over 6 million per year for the rangers to consider not matching
 
well if they do, people can stop whining because Stepan will be signed. unless they go to 4 firsts (elite money) rangers match and figure out how to get under cap later
 
Maybe if the "Teflon GM" (!!!) would get off his ass and showed this kid that he actually cares and didn't ruin him he'd be signed already instead of this!!!!!

Gorton is the one who negotiates contracts now I believe
 
They can't, they don't have next year's 1st due to the Bobby Ryan deal.
 
Maybe make an offersheet to nab another one of their players because they'll be tight under the cap?

13 years in and he's done nothing here and has never received heat for the countless bonehead moves he's made and some how you think he's not the Teflon GM? I'd love to hear your reasoning for this
 
3.4m offersheet is gonna scare the NYR, any higher requires a 1st which we don't have. Maybe the xm guy meant the Pens? Rhymes with Sens.

This situation happened with ottawa's Mezaroes and Tampa. Tampa offered Mezaroes a contract which was above what the senators were willing to pay but unfortunately tampa had traded there i believe second to San Jose. Ottawa instead of trying to work out a deal with Mezaroes arranged a trade for kuba-picard and a pick. Mezaroes ended up sucking in Tampa well there team ended up selecting Victor Headman. Before ageeing on a deal to trade kuba for mezaroes Tampa tried to reaquire its pick from San Joes so they could just offer compensation. Unfortunately San Joes was unwilling to trade the pick.
 
I don't really like offersheets too be honest. I personally think they can screw a team over. So thank god this is just a rumor and that it is never going to happen.
 
Wow, as a Sens fan I would love this to happen, but it probably won't.

Stepan is a boss.

I actually wouldn't love it. The rangers WOULD be able to match what we would offer. In the end, we would just be pissing off the rangers gm to the point where he could offersheet our players.

Well I mean if we actually got him.

If we sent an offer sheet but didn't get him, yeah it would be pretty crappy/pointless.
