Could Malkin Have His Number Retired?

Ron Francis can easily make that argument to have his #10 retired. Won his Frank J. Selke with us, and two Lady Byngs. He was our captain at times, and he even led the NHL in assists for two straight seasons (94/95 and 95/96). He enjoyed a 100 point and 119 point seasons. He was in on both Penguin Stanley Cup victories during the 90's. Yeah, I think Ronny "Franchise" Francis is definitely worthy of having his jersey retired, despite that he may have had more years with another team. His greatest success was with Pittsburgh. Bobby Hull as an example, had his jersey retired by multiple teams.
Going back to the OP's question, I can see Evgeni Malkin getting his jersey retired. As good as Sid the Kid is, we wouldn't have won our last Stanley Cup if it wasn't for Geno. Thus earning the Conn Smythe. He's 26 and what has he done besides, winning two Art Rosses and coming second in league scoring, well, gee... I don't think much more is needed to be said. In Jaromir Jagr's defence, despite leaving us not on the best of terms, and the way he played out his last hockey game for us, I still feel (even though once cheated), he deserves to also have his jersey retired. Then again, No. 68 is still playing hockey.

I'm sure Jagr's number will be retired after his career is over, no doubt. May be he left Pens not on the best of terms, but no one can deny his merits, he's done a lot for Pens. Helped to win Stanley Cup 2 times, won multiple Art-Ross trophies and Hart. One of the greatest players ever. Never a bad word about Pens, vica versa, he always spoke very high about Pittsburgh. I'm sure a lot of Pens fans still love him.
All geno has to do is resign for the rest of his career and its done. He's done a to. For this team already.

You look at teams like the Canadiens and stuff who have 1,2,4,6, whatever retired and Pens would have

and meh, i'm not that big on Francis getting his retired. I think he'll forever be a Whaler first and Penguin second.

Jagr will definitely have his number retired eventually. Love him or hate him he was an absolute icon for this team for a long time and he has the 2 cups. Sid will get his number retired whether he gets another cup for us or not. Malkin probably as well, but we'll have to wait and see if he stays on the team long term.

Time will tell on Malkin, but can we PLEASE see a game (or at least a practice) where everyone on the ice for the Pens is wearing #28?

If Malkin stays his career in Pittsburgh and doesn't go full Jarg he's a lock too.
As for MAF, if he stays his whole career and plays for another 10 years or so he's gonna set some pretty high records in wins and GP, not just for the Pens but for the league. If he ends the year at 250 wins (currently 237) and plays for 10 more years he will end his career in the top 3-5 of wins.
10 years @ 30 wins a year avg is 650
10 years @ 35 wins a year avg is 700

No to Francis. No to Barrasso. Malkin has a good shot if he spends his entire career here. Crosby will have his retired.
Jagr....his play while here was amazing, he deserves it for on ice performance for sure. But I can understand why he might not ever get it retired.

Eh if you want to put Jagr up you should do Barrasso as well, sure he wasn't good with the media but he was important to the team winning the cups. He was pretty good considering he was an "80s goalie" and even had one of his based years well into the 90s in 97-98. He even did a special contract to sign and retire in Pittsburgh.

Number retirement should be about respecting the greats to pass through your system. The fact that Jagr, Francis, and Tommy B aren't even in the Penguins all of fame is alarming to me. For a team with an influx of so many new, young fans, I think it would be wise for the Penguins to retire more numbers so that new fans can get interested in our franchise's history. I'm not saying that we should go overboard and induct any HHOF to lace up the skates in a Pens uniform, but players that were absolutely critical to the team need to be considered.

Yeah I do agree it's bizarre Samuelsson and Coffey are in the team HOF but not Barrasso or Francis..
