Not only will Sid and Geno have their numbers retired, but they are actually going to buy the team from Mario and Burkle when they retire, after learning the ways of "the tank." They will then draft the next "Sid and Geno" in their first years as owners, teach him how to own the league, and then after 15-20 years of domination, they'll pass the franchise on to him.
It'll be The Tank Dynasty
It's going to be a joint ceremony for me and Geno. Won't be a dry eye in the house.
If Sid, Geno and Jagr all eventually get their #s retired i'm pretty sure the Pens would have the highest average for retired #s in the NHL.
You look at teams like the Canadiens and stuff who have 1,2,4,6, whatever retired and Pens would have
66,21,87,71,68
and meh, i'm not that big on Francis getting his retired. I think he'll forever be a Whaler first and Penguin second.
Number retirement should be about respecting the greats to pass through your system. The fact that Jagr, Francis, and Tommy B aren't even in the Penguins all of fame is alarming to me. For a team with an influx of so many new, young fans, I think it would be wise for the Penguins to retire more numbers so that new fans can get interested in our franchise's history. I'm not saying that we should go overboard and induct any HHOF to lace up the skates in a Pens uniform, but players that were absolutely critical to the team need to be considered.
One day I hope to see:
66
68
21
35
71
87
And perhaps 10 all hanging in the rafters. After all, where would this franchise be without those guys?
