Honestly maybe the NHL should introduce Franchise Tags for players
The player still gets their max money, and small market teams have the ability to keep their Star

2028-2029 season, the cap will be projected to be over 115m. There's a bigger payday if he can take a short 2 year deal with his contract expiring for 2028-2029. (This would be risky for the player obviously)
These players are typically harder to land with an offersheet. Generally what you want to pay them is probably what the team is going to have to pay anyway. You have to really go so far over for it to work.

I wouldn’t be worried about an offer sheet in terms of not matching. I would be worried about an offer sheet where the term walks him straight to UFA in the shortest amount of time possible.

If you're signing Bedard to an offer sheet, you probably want to do a 1 year max offer sheet. It is just as difficult for Chicago to match, Bedard is likely to sign it, but it also leaves open the possibility to sign him to a market value 7 or 8 year extension before the end of the season.
In a scenario where Bedard is lukewarm on Chicago, if they match a 1 year max offer sheet, it means that he gets out of there within 1-4 seasons because he can continue to get expensive 1 year deals through signing his QO or being taken to team elected arbitration when eligible. If he plays to the point where he goes unqualified, he still wins because he would have banked more in the 1-3 years it takes for that to happen than he would have on a mid-term deal.
If there is any chance of this happening, it will lead to a trade. A trade makes more sense for everybody involved.
The other problem with a Bedard trade request would be that Vegas, Florida, and Dallas can only fit in so many players.

Canucks might be a team to make a push here. He would 100% sign it, and the team desperately needs a young franchise center. They have the cap space to make it happen as well. Four 1sts is a steep price to pay, but they have a solid pipeline of defencemen coming in and zero offensive talent outside of Lekkermaki.
Pipe dream, at the end of the day this would be one of the craziest developments in league history so I doubt it happens.

I would maybe sign a short-term three year deal at high money. I mean, fact remains that Chicago is rebuilding. They've been collecting high end draft picks and will get another this year - likely Michael Misa. You add Misa and another year to existing prospects and STOP paying gutter trash to fill out the roster like Foligno, Perry, and Maroon - you might start to have something. The building blocks are there, especially after this draft.

Chicago matches any offer, but a team like Carolina could piss them off and offer something like 12m x 5 or 3, thinking Bedard even at that term is worth more than 4 of their 1st round picks.

The owners are the ones fronting the money and assuming the risk. They get SOME benefit from the relationship. Otherwise, why invest and own a team?

Not going to derail the thread any more than I already have, but the NHL is a joke compared to every other major professional sports league. How much of that is due to a commissioner who has made pretty much every decision to the benefit of his worst owners? All of it.
It's no wonder NHL ratings are in the toilet. So yeah, I stand by my comment that Bettman's enduring legacy is turning the NHL into a poverty league.
As they continuously post record revenues year after year...

I think you are making connections on things that aren't really there.
Explain the connection between a decision Bettman made for the "worst" owner that is causing rating to be "in the toliet".
Like, hey, maybe that's the case? Just provide me an example and walk me through it.

Please let's not go the NBA route where we normalize NHL players calling their shots and naming their destinations.
Imagine Crosby demanded out after his sophmore year? (Yes I know they made playoffs but they were a brutal team for years and missed in his rookie year and bounced round 1 in his 2nd year).
Stick it out and build a legacy. Blackhawks a historic original 6 franchise, they have good pieces and are going to draft another massive one this summer. Once they are half decent FA's will be easily sold on Chicago.

This will really be the true test on whether Davidson is a good GM. He’s made the right rebuilding moves, but those are usually the easy types of moves to make. Transitioning a team from rebuilding to competing is where the hard work comes into play, so it’ll be interesting to see if he is skilled enough to do this.

And higher you go the more the draft capital you have to pony up increases so you’re basically taking a risk on multiple fronts. Big reason signed and unmatched offer sheets are rare and typically for players that haven’t had a big breakout when the existing team is cap strapped.
