Cord cutter in NYC how to watch games

So the stream(s) I use all stopped allowing the playback feature which I heavily used. Was nothing better than after feeding and getting the kids to bed, bathing the baby, doing some housework, going out and shopping after the long workday, to sit down and enjoy the game on my own schedule without commercials and not needing to burn 2.5 hours of my night for it. I looked into other options to simply stream all the games at a minor but not insubstantial cost, but there was no single option for a chord cutter like myself and I really didn't want to have to purchase multiple apps to do this. Maybe someone knows a solution that I haven't found, but below is a workaround I've discovered.

First, I saw VLC suggested here to use as a streaming viewer platform but that didn't work for any of the streams. Downloaded the latest (beta) VLC but still, no go.

I finally came upon an ok solution, it just requires a stable stream. Microsoft has a built in recorder (meant for gaming but records video just fine), so once I get a stable stream going, I turn on the recorder and then take care of what I have to irl with the game running on my laptop. The issues are a few. If the stream stops then I need to notice it and reload it without looking at the score which means somewhat frequent peeking in to see if the colors on my laptop are changing aka the stream is running. For more stable streams this really isn't much of an issue, but even the most stable of streams will once in a while have a hitch and require a reload. The other issues are that sometimes the sound doesn't come through (don't really care so much about this), and one time the output file was incorrect. The last issue is the limit is 4 hours which for reg season is fine, but playoffs might become a problem. Similarly, if it goes to double OT in the POs, then when I peek in at 10:30 and see the game still going (don't see the score of course) I'll know due to the later hour it was tied at regulation which will be pretty annoying for me when I watch the game from the beginning. So I might have to let it go for all 4 hours, not peek in, and then just watch it in the AM if I really want to be in the dark about OT vs. No OT.

It's definitely a bit of a pain and not perfect by any means, but worth it for me as watching the games at a later time without commercials is extremely important for me and I don't want to pay a monthly fee for 3 different apps. Hope this helps anyone else who might be having the same issues.

EDIT: Just reading tonight's GDT about all the complaining regarding NYR black outs/not being covered by certain services confirms my choices.

I have a verizon wireless plan that automatically gives me the disney + bundle and I often watch with that. More often than not I am running MSG go off of a family member's account.

YES Network announced yesterday that beginning today it will be available direct to consumer in the Yankees broadcast region. It will include games broadcast on YES. $24.99/mo or $249.99/year (there is an early bird special). I know there was talk of MSG doing to same with MSG GO, so hopefully this is the start.

MSG already announced their rates... $29.99 per month, or $309.99 anually. They also are offering a PPV plan.. $9.99 a game.

It's unclear now if cable / payTV operators will drop the RSN's from their standard tiers (once their current carriage agreement is up) in response to this in an effort to lower rates for those who do not watch sports.

wow what a steal. Yankees fans can watch regular season games for 6 months out of the year for $150 or pay an extra $100 and watch whatever off-season programming the YES network has

Considering I pay $210/month for cable-internet and the only channels I need cable for are SNY and MSG, then the apps on their own would be a steal.

What’s the best way to watch NHLN games? I have ESPN+ for all the non National games (I’m out of market in NC, so only when the Rangers play the Canes do I get blacked out), I have YouTube TV for TNT/TBS games, the one weak spot I have is that NHLN isn’t on YouTube TV. What are my options?

They’re not good at all. You’re looking at having to subscribe to another service like slingtv or fubotv. And probably looking at spending $50 a month (at least) if you want nhl network, it will be part of a larger package.

That’s why I never feel bad pirating shit. The nhl is a f***ing joke.

If and friends or family have access to it on their cable, I’d see if you can use their account and watch on the tv providers app.

I'm not sure how much you're willing to spend but I'll just reiterate that I am having a good experience with Fubo. You can watch anywhere on your phone, TV, tablet, etc. Don't have to be on your home network, so if you're away from home you still have access to all the features. And it has DVR option which is handy for me because often I don't get to start the games on time. MSG, NHL Network, MLB Network, SNY, all the regular cable channels.

How much is it per month?

So both the Flyers and Bruins games were technically NHL Network games, well at least for national and out of market viewers. But I watched both games on MSG, meaning they obviously had local/regional rights.

Does anyone know, is that always the case when Rangers, or any team plays an NHL Network game? Do the RSN's always have the rights to show the game to the people in their market?

And do the Rangers have any future games left on the schedule on NHL Network? It's surprisingly difficult to find such basic information on google....

Also note to out of towners. The games, under this scenario, are available (MSG Broadcast) on ESPN+ after the game is over. Both Flyers and Bruins games were up on the platform in the afternoon.

I am a rangers fan in dallas rhat also has youtube tv, when the rangers are on nhl network you have to wait 24 hours from the completion of the game then it will be uploaded and watchable on espn+. I had to wait until saturday and sunday to watch the games last weekend.
