Functionally the Jets have $13 million in cap space even with the adds/re-signing in the last 24 hours, that's the max they can create on day one of the season when Little goes on LTIR. Until that time they can be 10% over so roughly $90 million including Little.

Copp is likely $4 million max on a 1 year, maybe a bit more on a long-term.

Pionk is probably $6 million.

Stanley is probably $1 million

Backup goalie is $1 million or less.

Have a million wiggle room.

They have to fill out a number of other roster spots as well. They have no room to pay Copp $4 million.

We'd only have 9 forwards signed. That million disappears quickly, even if we fill the rest of the slots with league minimum forwards.

Yeah there won't be a lot of days with 23 players up. Beaulieu will be dealt or buried I think. At that point they are right at the cap with a 20-21 man roster if Copp, Pionk and Stanley get deals in the range expected. They can squeeze it in, but they can also deal Copp.

Maybe these moves and the accompanying cap crunch gives perfetti an inside track to making the team out of camp with his ELC

I'm loving all these moves we're making but I'm starting to wonder if we're pricing Copp out of town.
He'd be great to bring back but it's pretty clear that he's going to need a decent raise and I'm not sure we can or should do that.

If anything, it's backing Copp into a corner. If Pionk's deal is already done and pending cap compliance day to be announced, then everything will be set on our roster aside from the RFAs after UFA day tomorrow. We may pick up a 4th line veteran at minimum wage, and we may pick up a back-up goalie at minimum wage. From that point, we tell Copp "Look, we have $x,xxx, xxx to pay you (I suspect that number is right around $4,000,000). There's no negotiation - either take it, or your rights will be traded". If the number is close enough to what Copp wants and he's willing to compromise, we roll with it. It's shrewd negotiating, but we're operating with razor thin margins here.

We have to take it into account until the season starts and he can be LTIR. He's not on the LTIR during the off-season, and thus counts against the cap.

The thing you're not accounting for though is that we may actually want Copp back (because he's good).

Ive heard similar comments but there certainly is LTIR in the offseason. Capfriendly has a good faq on it. I found the section about the training camp calculation especially insightful.

I think moving Copp + Little as a package may be the most savvy move here. Arizona has been taking contracts on, maybe they could get a RW like Fischer or Roussel with the package.

Gives Chevy a few million extra to add more depth to the fourth line in addition to the return

They'd probably prefer picks over Copp if we are moving Littles contract.

The only reason to do this would be if the Jets can’t afford the cash to pay Little. For now the best play is to be as far over the cap as possible to a max of what Little’s cap hit is.

Not sure how much of a comparable Armia is these days, given their different profiles and specializations, but he's resigned to a four-year extension with a $3.4 million AAV with Montreal. Something in that ballpark would be a lot easier to make work -- though doubtful he signs anywhere near that little, I guess.

If it comes down to Pionk v Copp it's Pionk for me, although I really like the consistency, versatility and fire that Copp brings and wonder if Chevy might have played the last contract differently had he known how valuable Copp would become.

4 x 3.4 would be a good deal for Copp. I’m not sure he realizes that though. That would buy an RFA year that won’t get him to 3.4 and 3 UFA years. The cap will be flat the entire time, more and more teams will be crunched in that period as the buyouts are happening like crazy. Lowry is at 3.25 as a top 3 C. Copp will have a hard time justifying more than that.

Truly hoping this is the case. When Lowry signed his 5 year deal at $3,25 million I had high hopes that Copp's next deal would be roughly the same.

Four months of reading people claim he wants in the neighbourhood $5 million and I've lost my optimism.

But a Lowry like deal solves all immediate cap concerns.

I had thought about that as well. Getting rid of that contract would help a lot.
