Copps Coliseum is now officially a 'relic'

Boy, if they sink one public dime into that relic, if I was a Hamilton taxpayer I'd be OUTRAGED, I say!

Ontario and the feds have made it very clear we will not be funding pro arenas and stadiums now would they help a new 5000 seat major jr arena maybe.

Back during the Coyotes BK days, Bettman said the arena needed about 200 mil worth of upgrades and that was back in 2009.

Saying that, being a relic is strange reason deny the memorial cup hosting duties as the Brandt Centre in Regina who won the bid has an arena that's 10 years olders.

Even though, I don’t think city should be looking at a new one, not even a 5K building.

Do you think the owner might have put the CHL up to it because he wants to government to kick in some money towards a new arena? He got the league to be the 'bad guy' for him?

Ottawa talked about bidding, but as I far as I heard it was decided not to go forward mainly because of the state of the team, and they didn't feel they'd be a contender by then. There was never any talk of the Civic Centre being an issue and it can't be any better than Copps.

If Ottawa had bid many expected the mem cup would have been at the Ctc.

Isn't the building at least used for concerts, WWE, etc.? I would assume a 5000 seat arena would be too small to attract much of anything of that nature.

Your not going to be getting a new 20,000 seat arena for a team that avg 4500 and the odd concert etc.

Nassau County Coliseum was 10 years older and in far worse shape and the Islanders were still based out of there as recently as 2015.

It was awful while they were there and they're done now.

I'm not sure what point you're making.

Didn’t they just had the memorial cup in Quebec old colisé exactly because it was a relic? I guess if a arena is 40 years old it just a old building. If it 65 it a iconic place.

Difference is that Quebec City has one of the biggest junior clubs in the country...

I thinks it's perfectly obvious what his point is and it certainly isn't a jab at the Islanders.

Hint: If the NHL Islanders can play in an old dilapidated building full of asbestos for a period of time, the Memorial Cup can be in Hamilton.

I think there is great concern about attendance so by them saying the building is to old that lets them off the hook.

Islanders local TV deal and acceptance by the New York Rangers to exist in that market is why there is still a team Brooklyn, Nassau County.... Hamilton as a city on the other hand, has a NHL team right up the road that is very happy in making sure a new NHL ownership group in Hamilton has never or will never set up shop and starts infringing on their territory or competing with their TV Broadcasts. That is why Honolulu has a better chance at an NHL team one day before Hamilton or anywhere else in Southern Ontario. ;)

Agreed, the Leafs (and Buffalo) are a part of the problem. But don't let Bettman off the hook. Not a chance in hell he wants another team in Canada.

That said IIRC Hamilton's best chance to get a team was when Ballard owned the Tiger Cats. Unfortunately the voters of Hamilton elected a new city council.
I think Killion knows the rest of the story:)

You stated that you thought they would probably tear the building down and replace it with one that seats 5000. I was questioning that because I thought the current building with its size would be needed for Hamilton to at least host concerts, WWE, etc. You wouldn't be able to do that in a 5000 seat facility.

Same with Vancouver. The Pacific Coliseum was 39 years old at the time, and I'd wager was/is in worse shape than FirstOntario Centre. That said, they knew Vancouver would compete for the title, so the aesthetics of the arena probably weren't a concern.

Hamilton rejected by Memorial Cup because First Ontario Centre is just too old ...

Hamilton Spectator: FirstOntario Centre: Face it, it’s now a relic

If the CHL feels this way, it's clear the NHL feels the same way ... have at it, folks ...

1985 built just like the Saddledome--there is a reason why Calgary also wants one

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_National_Hockey_League_arenas

all teams with Arenas about the same age are saying they need new one or are in fact building new ones
