Controversial Regular Season Report Card

Eh, you could come up with an "objective" grade by averaging out comparable contracts at the same position, then looking at their stats. Like +/-, points, TOI. That kind of takes your own opinion out of it.

And we've gone that way with Franzen. People often point to his production as proof that he's playing fine. Maybe, when looking at just the numbers he's in line with the other $4M wingers around the league. But subjectively, when you watch him, it's pretty obvious that some games he decides to bring it and other games he doesn't at all.

Even then, use of stats in hockey is kind of a tough sell -- especially for defensive players, checkers, etc.

A letter grade of E is dating yourself, albeit younger but still shows. For the life of me I have never understood this change in American schools.

Because it didn't make much sense to go A-B-C-D, and then skip E into F.

Yeah but it's still "objective" in so far as you're taking opinion out of it. And especially for a forward like Franzen, you can use traditional and more "advanced" stats (Corsi/Fenwick) to make those kind of rankings.

Really don't understand how Z is getting B's and Franzen is getting C's by some people.

Zetterberg's second half, until the final 4 games. His plus minus, too.

Franzen's entire season, until the final 10 games.

How does Smith get a B?

Agree with most of Bob's grades, although Abdelkader is just a waste of a roster spot and a terrible hockey player(relative to NHL talent of course).

Datsyuk A+
Zetterberg B-
Filppula D
Franzen B-
Cleary F
Abdelkader C
Brunner C-
Nyquist B+
Tatar B
Eaves D
Tootoo B-

DeKeyser B
Kindl B-
Smith C-
Quincey D
Lashoff F

Howard B+

How the heck does Abby only have 3 assists? You would think he would fumble the puck and his linemates would make a point out of it more than that.

Making 3 foot passes to team mates should yield more than that.

Datsyuk A
Zetterberg B+
Flip F-
Cleary - Not even going to give him a grade because that would imply he was worth grading or taking the time to think about him.
Gator F
Brunner C+
Nyquist B+
Franzen B-
Tatar B+
Eaves C
Miller C
Emmerton C
Andersson C

Kronwall C+
Ericsson C+
Dekeyser INC
Kindl B+
Quincey C-
Smith D

Howard B
Gustavsson never showed up for class so i cant give him a grade.

How does Tatar warrant a C when he produced more even strength points per minute than any other Red Wing?

How does Lashoff -- who gushed goals against, warrant a higher grade of C+?

I considered the roles each guy was used in, number of GP, rookie vs veteran, etc. Filppula is obviously more important to the team right now than Tatar, for example, but you have to measure each guy against the reasonable expectations you have for them. I'd be tougher on Ericsson than Smith, for example, all else being equal, since the former has 3 yrs on experience on him.

Tatar wasn't a factor on the team, hence my inconclusive. It's tough to use the same scale for the guys who barely play.

Lashoff came in out of left field, held down a defensive spot, and his gushing was comparable to the team's overall gushing. He was as average as the Wings, but I gave him the + since I didn't even expect him on the team.

He's last in TOI (14th) -- excluding Bert, Helm, Sammy, of course, and 18 GP. IT/gm was 11-ish min, which down in the Tootoo, Emmerton and Eaves scapes.

Smith and Lashoff were staples on defense.

And Tatar made the most of it. He didn't suck ass like Lashoff, who made a negative impact.
For about three weeks, Tatar was our third or fourth best forward. The lack of impact was a result of babcock's idiocy

If you look at it that way, I suppose.

But as for impact while in the line up, Tatar far surpassed Smith and Lashoff.

The "offensively gifted" Smith couldn't score a goal in 34 games and wasn't great in his own end, and Lashoff was at best a 6th defenseman.

Many people on this board will tell you Tatar was the best forward other than D and Z in many of the games he played.

Cleary - Not even going to give him a grade because that would imply he was worth grading or taking the time to think about him.

I had the same thought. If Cleary doesn't get an E/F then I don't know what you have to do to warrant that grade... actively sabotage your own team? Shoot pucks at your own net? (no Kindl jokes)

Grades are based on my expectations.

Very solid grades. Only tweaks I'd make are to Quincey and Fil--not sure they even deserve D's. In my mind both failed. They really needed to step up this year and they weren't even average most nights.

Outside of Nose's rankings though, a quick comment on Abs and Cleary: Not sure why everyone piles on the hate for these two. They're not top line players and they don't suddenly become so just because you stick them with Z and Pav. Blame Babcock for putting them there--or better yet blame Holland for not getting a top 6 forward so Babs didn't have to do this.
