Which teams do you have as contenders? And pretenders?

Avs, Vegas and Winnipeg are my contenders

With the Oilers, Leafs, and Washington as pretenders

Why do you have the Leafs as pretenders? Please go through your points 1 by 1 so we can better understand your reasoning. Thank you.

2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017 :sarcasm:

I actually expect some good things from them this year, this just felt easy to post

And let’s see:

Contenders:

TB. Dallas if Heiskanen returns. Avs. Winnipeg if Helly stays unreal.

Pretenders: Everyone else. Shoutout to Florida, y’all goofy.

Jets are contenders? In what fantasy world?

Because in this real world Jets have like 30% winning rate in playoffs in last 10 years. This is a pure regular season team.

Contenders: FLA, TBL, COL, VGK

Pretenders: EDM, DAL, WPG, CAR, TOR, WSH

The rest: nobody thinks they have a chance anyway, myself included.

Winner: COL
Runner-up: TBL

Darkhorse (Not expected to win but I could see going on a run): OTT, STL, WSH

Just happy to be there (Won't win, but also isn't pretending to be a contender): CGY, CBJ, LA, MIN, MTL, NJ

Contenders: Leafs, Florida, Washington, Avalanche

Pretenders: Lightning, Canes, Vegas, Dallas, Jets

Dark Horse: Oilers, New Jersey, Ottawa, St. Louis

Out round 1: Montreal, Minny, LA

I agree with most of this except switch Tampa for Washington and add Vegas as a contender.

I like Jersey too even though they are underdogs going in.

Nice list.

Toronto is a bit of an enigma to me.

On the one hand, they have owned my Bolts this year, have had a strong season, definitely feels like they are better suited for playoff hockey than they have in previous seasons.

On the other hand, their underlying numbers/advanced stats have been unimpressive and it is hard to reconcile one with the other.

Their power play is plenty good but their penalty killing is a little below league average, which is not what you want to see, although they do not take a ton of penalties.

Their goaltending has been quite good, but I wonder if their tandem introduces hard questions for the coaching staff if one guy gets off to a shaky start.

Then you add in the history and the pressure. I dunno, something tells me this is the year they get over the hump and win more than 5 games. But then again, both Tampa and Florida look really nasty this year.

I would say that one of those three teams is going to the Cup, but hard to tell who. Carolina doesn't strike me as a much better team than the ones that have gotten bumped early. I could see a conference final appearance but not a ton more. I think Montreal might even give them a tough time. New Jersey is good but they just won't be able to fill in for Hughes for all that long. Washington just screams "regression candidate." They take a ton of penalties and don't really have a ton of experience up and down the lineup aside from a couple of holdovers from their last big run.

In the West, I think Winnipeg has all the right pieces but it comes down to execution. If Dallas gets its stars back (ha) early enough, I think they are poised to take the West. Colorado is great, too, but I wonder about the goaltending and the depth players. Edmonton seems to have taken a step back, and while I will never cast doubt on McDavid's ability to take over a series, he just hasn't shown that level of worldbeater dominance this year. Couple that with the four nations and he looks--dare I say--tired. The Ekholm loss is huge. I just don't know that they can overcome that with so many horses in the West. Kings are a sleeper team too. They play the right way. If they can get some offense I think they can make a run.

My prediction: Whoever comes out of the Atlantic vs. Dallas or WPG

Man, people really do live in a fantasy world where the Jets have been good since their 2018 run, don't they?

99, 92 (pro-rated), 92 (pro-rated), 89, 95, 110.

Pure regular season team indeed.

My prediction? TBL and the Avs in a rematch.

Odds of making the SCF

West
Jets
Knights
Probably the 2 best teams for a deep SC run except the Jets have to get over that hump, they are a bit like Leafs west in this regard.

Avs
Stars
When healthy both of these teams are legit SC contenders, shame one of them will be out after the first round.

If Miro is out Avs might go on a deep run.

Don't count Dallas out though, very well constructed team for a deep SC run.

Oilers
Kings
Can LA finally break the spell?

Blues
Wild

Blues are playing really well lately but I just don't see a way even if they beat Minny in the first round.

East
Caps
Leafs
2 very interesting teams could go deep on paper but could also be upset in the first round.

I think both teams make it through to round 2.

Lightning
Panthers
I see this as TB's last chance as their team has many miles on it and it might come down to Vasi as the difference.

Winner of this series just might be the Sc finalists from the EAST.

Canes
Sens
Sens fans have to be excited as all the reassure is on the Leafs but can they get it done.

Tanev and Carlo on the Leafs back end might be the difference.

Canes and NJ, 2 teams that at times looked really good but they just seem to be not ready.

See above just not ready yet.
Cinderella team and with nothing to lose they might make things interesting against the Capitals.

They can get outplayed but stay in games, should be interesting if they can match the Capitals in the first round.
