OT: Consolidated Entertainment Thread (TV, movies, books, games) part VI - use spoiler tags!

Since we are talking Dracula, you know what movie got bad reviews but I actually thought was really surprising, in a good way, was 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter'
I enjoyed it. Did it get bad reviews? There is always a disconnect between general movie critics and those that understand horror movies and especially period pieces.

$80 for digital and $90 physical is insane. I haven't been into gaming in quite some time but at those prices I'll never get back into it. Absolute insanity.
Again, this is alleged. I've seen another source say it's a $70 digital/$80 physical split. We just don't know until it comes from Nintendo's mouth. On top of that, buying physical for Switch 2 is moot because it's been confirmed some of them will just have that thing on them that checks for a license online. It's what Sony and Microsoft have been doing for a while.

Another thing we do know is that the Switch 2 region locked because Nintendo wants to undercut scalpers.
Yeah $80 games is ridiculous while the devs barely get paid anymore. Gotta love capitalism
They barely get paid if they aren't laid off, and with AI the latter is just gonna get worse. We're in a cost of living crisis to begin with and events outside of our control are going to bump them up again.

Given that three kids take up all of my attention these days, gaming is a no-go outside of my phone emulator to begin with. The twins might be out pretty soon, though, so at that point it'll be wait-and-see. It doesn't help that the wife has gone waaaaaaay overboard with buying bamboo clothing brands, which aren't cheap. I'm not in a rush because my Steam Deck exists in my own home, and it has hundreds of games.

I discovered bamboo socks years ago on a cruise and have not looked back.

$70/$80 split is still way too high to me too. Would be nice to see people not buy anything at these prices but that won't happen.

Getting rid of physical drives has been the goal of the industry for a while, they want everything to be purely digital. Saves them costs even though it's not expensive to make disccs/carts, but also they want to undercut the re-sale market from GameStop/eBay etc.

If there's no re-sale market then you have to buy everything new from the digital marketplace at full price. Plus it gives Nintendo (and Sony and Microsoft, this isn't just a Nintendo thing) control over distribution.

I wonder how much is also setting a higher price to try and “convince” consumers to join monthly services instead.

The consistent monthly money would be better for most of the companies than the wild spikes of revenue.

Good little history lesson here of how games were once priced at however much they felt was necessary, and how the rise of PlayStation established the entire concept of "a video game should cost this much" because of how they used CDs instead of proprietary cartridges. It seems like Nintendo wants to bring us back to the days of the SNES and Sega Genesis when it comes to game pricing, and I don't think you're going to hear the big publishers complain. It's almost a guarantee that GTA6 is going to cost $100 now.

Now I'm curious how much my copy of Earthbound cost, since that came in a big box with its own strategy guide. I'm certain it was more than average, just not sure by how much. Price had to have been one of the factors of why it sold terribly when it first came out, along with a truly bad marketing campaign and graphics that were considered outdated by critics.

Finished this today. Started really slow and was afraid that was all it was gonna be but picked up nicely once the alien AI came on the scene. Think Bender but way more powerful and smarter. Hit it's stride with the odd couple play between the AI and main character. Got book 2 and didn't realize there's 16 books in the series. Not sure I'm up for that much content but we'll see how book 2 plays out. Might be a fun series to return to every now and again.

Pretty solid S02 opening for The Last of Us. I never played the games but I know the story of both. I just can’t get over the casting of Bella Ramsey as Ellie when Callie Spaeny exists and was very good in Alien: Romulus. Anyway, I’m just happy Sunday night HBO is back (not a White Lotus fan so never watched).

The girl from Juno would’ve been absolutely perfect for the role, if this was made 10 years ago. Haven’t seen her act in anything recently though.

Because of the stress of having three kids under three, my wife and I took a date night together on Friday. She chose the dinner (sushi) while I chose the movie. I noticed that Black Bag was directed by Steven Soderbergh, and I heard he did his own interesting spin on the spooky haunted house movie with Presence, so I decided to go with that.

Well, I think my wife is going to be doing the choosing from here on out. It was awful. It's a spy thriller without any of the spy action, instead it's full of that annoying kind of banter. None of the characters set themselves apart in any way. And it's all British actors, so that's even worse- they're great at comedic banter.

My wife said that with the edibles we took, we should have seen A Minecraft Movie instead. But even if that movie was better (I doubt it), I would have hated the audience participation.

Well, for starters, Ellie was based off of Ellen Page, that's why the character looks like her.

More importantly, Ellen Page transitioned a few years ago and is now Elliot Page. I think he's sticking to producing these days instead of acting. Appropriately, his company is called "Page Boy."

I enjoyed Black Bag. It’s less a spy movie than a whodunnit. It also follows in the tradition of more realistic British spy craft thrillers. Less Bond more Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy type of story. I like Fassbender and Blanchette but not the movie to watch while in an altered state. It’s a bit complex with all the moving plot details.

If you look back before the lawsuit, Ellie pretty much looked exactly like Ellen Page. She still does but they did tweak her a little bit before the game was released.
There's a rather significant reason for that. Ellen Page is no longer female actress Ellen Page.
I was being silly with the 2nd part of my post.

3 under 3, god bless my man. Our daughter just turned 3 and we’re expecting #2 in 2 weeks. I could not fathom a 3rd child on top of that lol.
