Aside from trolls, I think it's been actually accepted that he has been committed to a more all-around game for a couple of seasons. I'm actually more surprised his buddy Drai is at +21.

I am too because I remember him being a - player earlier in the season.

Since December 21st:

In 34 games played. (they are #1, and #3 in league for this stretch too - all top 4 players are Oilers)

Prior to Dec 21st:

- Draisaitl - 7 in 29 games
- McDavid -1 in 27 games

Not enough people actually watch the games or have caught on yet. It takes a few seasons for a non-traditional player's Selke candidacy (real or imagined) to become established, i.e. Crosby having 22 combined votes during his first 10 seasons, getting 26 total over the next 3 seasons when it was clear that his offense production was waning, before his peak candidacy at 4th in 2018-2019.

It’s not really that unusual. He was 3rd among forwards in 16-17 and is 4th in the league (and 2nd among forwards) since 20-21. When the Oilers have been good, his plus minus has been good. Though his underlying defensive numbers are particularly strong this year.

All stats need context. All stats are fundamentally impacted by the quality of linemates and entire team

Plus minus is a valuable stat, although I would say that I agree with you a little bit in that they are more impacted by team factors than most other surface stats. It's still an underrated stat that has use

But putting all context in place, McDavid has done something really impressive this year. Look at his relative plus minus to his teammates over the years. He's had a sharp raise there.

Howe - not generational, the next thing after that

Crosby and OV - same not generational? 1 tier below that

Lemieux - generational - a guy who has the talent to put 3000 pts and/or win 10+ ross/hart/lindsays if healthy

Orr --> generational - a guy who cpuld have put 2K pts as a D-man won 10+ norris and 4-5 ross/harts if healthy

Gretzky --> generational - a gut with almost 3K pts in a full caeer, 10 rosses/harts etc

Mcdavid is in a lower scoring era than 99 and 66 yet has the ability to have 2200+ pts and 10+ rosses
