Not commenting on McDavid’s great defensive play or lack thereof as I don’t watch enough Oiler games to have a great read, but +/- isn’t the greatest way to tell, it can be helpful, but still not great. When I look at the stat I generally just compare to rest of team, but that’s not great either as you’d have to consider offense as well. It’s hard to have a good +/- stat without contributing a lot offensively, so technically the very best defensive player in the world can have a pretty bad +/- if they aren’t great offensively.
I’l admit, I don’t dive into the advanced stats as I simply don’t like them…goes a bit too far, etc…so somewhat simplistically on this stat would take McDavid and see he has 70 even strength pts and suggest he’s been on the ice for 70 goals for…would be higher than that of course as he wouldn’t get a point for every goal scored while he’s on the ice….then I see he’s been on the ice for at least 41 goals against…Draisaitl would be 30 goals against and Hyman would be 18 goals against. Anyway, I know there are actual stats that show exactly how many goals against, I’m just not bothering to look it up, simply pointing out you can’t just look at +/- in isolation.
It’s a good stat for him though, it’s not like some of the guys that have been clearly offensive only where they have a pretty low +/- compared to teammates while also scoring a lot of points
