I forgot to mention in that thread about hfboard contradictions how people hate +/- stats. Except me and a few others apparently.

Impressive by McDavid. Awesome stuff.
Yep. +/- can provide a lot of insight into a player's effect on the ice over a large enough sample size.

Kucherov and Point hovering around 0 and -15? No surprise the Lightning are mired in a wild card battle despite Kucherov's shot at the art Ross.

I'm curious (but not enough to look it up right now) what's the worst +/- an art Ross winner has ever had?

These are the only players in single digits or below:

1. Gretzky -25 in 1993-1994
2. Draisaitl -7 in 2019-2020
3. Mikita 0 in 1967-1968
4. St.Louis 0 in 2012-2013
5. Benn +1 in 2014-2015
6. Geoffrion +3 in 1960-1961
7. Gretzky +8 in 1989-1990

Not commenting on McDavid’s great defensive play or lack thereof as I don’t watch enough Oiler games to have a great read, but +/- isn’t the greatest way to tell, it can be helpful, but still not great. When I look at the stat I generally just compare to rest of team, but that’s not great either as you’d have to consider offense as well. It’s hard to have a good +/- stat without contributing a lot offensively, so technically the very best defensive player in the world can have a pretty bad +/- if they aren’t great offensively.

I’l admit, I don’t dive into the advanced stats as I simply don’t like them…goes a bit too far, etc…so somewhat simplistically on this stat would take McDavid and see he has 70 even strength pts and suggest he’s been on the ice for 70 goals for…would be higher than that of course as he wouldn’t get a point for every goal scored while he’s on the ice….then I see he’s been on the ice for at least 41 goals against…Draisaitl would be 30 goals against and Hyman would be 18 goals against. Anyway, I know there are actual stats that show exactly how many goals against, I’m just not bothering to look it up, simply pointing out you can’t just look at +/- in isolation.

It’s a good stat for him though, it’s not like some of the guys that have been clearly offensive only where they have a pretty low +/- compared to teammates while also scoring a lot of points

He has been really good defensively this season. It isn't a coincidence his improved play and the Oilers season turnaround happened at the same time.

I'm sure some people will find some way to discredit it.
Do people really discredit mcdavid? Hes universally considered the best player by a long shot.

If you think Connor McDavid gets "discredited' .. you probably need to see the talk re players not named Connor McDavid.

Just weird to me .. every fanbase thinks their star is "discredited" but Im sorry, I dont want to hear Oilers fans try to play the "victim" card here

Its Connor McDavid ffs

+/- is a bad statistic that doesn't show what people think it does.

McDavid is the greatest player of our generation, and arguably since the last player of the Big 4 retired. The Oilers are absolutely dominating the opposition 5v5 while he's on the ice 5v5. Shots (+12 per 60 minutes), shot attempts (+25 per 60 minutes), scoring chances (+15 per 60 minutes), expected goals (+1.5 per 60 minutes), you name it.

And yes, the Oilers also score more goals than they allow when he's on the ice, despite his having his lowest on-ice save percentage since his shortened rookie season.

Doesn’t matter now that he’s the leader.

By the way, this will be his sixth season with at least a +20. A supposed two way wizard like Crosby has two.
Yeah but Crosby has THREE cup rings and a gold medal game winning over time goal. So theres that

I could be wrong, but I believe that this thread is not an argument for the validity of +/- as a stat, but it is intended as a response to the myriad of posts on this forum that have used poor +/- to suggest that McDavid can't win because he doesn't play the "right way".

How in the world did Gretzky end up -25? Did he not play defense? Can I run with that narrative now?

Meh...Brad McCrimmon had a +86 one year.

Ok, and that’s why he’s considered the greatest ever, what’s your point?
