I love Connor Brown back from his time with the Leafs. Was very happy to see him thrive when he got to Ottawa (he looked much faster after that off-season which he desperately needed).

Was watching the post game last night and he was getting interviewed by Oake and Debrusk. Great kid. I wanted to see what he was making this year (as I had hoped that he might return to the Leafs this off-season before he chose the Oilers) and his contract is very interesting. He has a $775k cap hit this year but receives a $3,225,000 bonus once he plays 10 games.

Depending on how Edmonton handles their cap this year, that could be A LOT of dead cap on their books next season (as performance bonuses transfer to the following season if there is not enough room to fit them in the current season). Similar to what Boston is dealing with due to the performance bonuses of Krejci and Bergeron from last year.

I would have assumed it would have been more games played to hit the bonus. 10 seems light.

Edmonton had no choice but to backload his contract

He’s looked like a 3rd/4th line player so far in this early season. It could very well backfire on Edmontons next gm

Brown might of gotten unfair hype and expectations around him coming to Edmonton. He was basically everyone’s “sleeper” fantasy pick with the expectation he was gonna light it up with Mcdavid.

He was really just a really good middle of the pack liner 3rd/2nd that could be plug and play player when called upon to fill any role which he was decent at. Kinda like a Zach Hyman but Hyman was always better imo.

My concern is he’s been having injury trouble in recent years and players like him at his age tend to fall off a cliff after a major injury(torn acl). I really did like him in Toronto and hope he finds success and I do think he could be useful in other roles but I don’t think he’ll meet expectations people hoped playing with Mcdavid which was unfair to begin with.

Why wouldn't a team at the bottom of the standings claim him and hope he rebounds and can be flipped for a 2nd at the deadline due to his low cap hit?

I thought the team holding his contract at the end of the year will need to pay the bonus? We had this debate before and I forget the outcome. The bonus is the problem
 
From the CapFriendly FAQ:

"Performance Bonuses are paid to a player if the requirements of the bonus are met, and are given over the course of the season as they are met."

It would appear that each bonus Is paid by the team the player is playing on when the requirement for that bonus is met.

I like the player too and won't comment on whether he gets his game back or not, because I have no idea.

However, I don't think $4M spread over two years is how this works. He will be $3M on the cap for Edmonton next year...of be doesn't play for them. If he does, he will be $3M + whatever his salary is next year. It can't be bonus-heavy again because he wont qualify for that again.

That's dead cap space next year and there is no other way to look at it. Edmonton knowingly mortgaged $3M of next year's cap to get Brown THIS year. Yes, it a rising cap and all that but it's a risk. If that cap goes up $4M it only goes up $1M for the Oilers.

You are correct as to how the cap is distribute & that is what I meant. And yes, of course, EDM knowingly mortgaged $3.225m of next years cap in order to fit Brown this year. But they also got a guy who is likely a $4mil-ish player for league min this year. You have to look at both sides of the coin in order to get the full picture.

Mortgaging the cap does work for the total cap picture. That's the important thing. It's the reason why Holland was so adamant that McLeod and Bouchard are signed for two years. Pretty much the whole team will be the same next season and no raises. (Edit: there are a few raises potentially in depth spots, but if they need more money we have Foegele's 2.75 coming off)

The one difference is we won't have Brown. But, perhaps we can count on our key RW prospects stepping in. Our prospect pool is weak but Bourgault and Lavoie are perhaps the last blast of quality in terms of top six talent. Or, maybe the cap will rise enough to keep Brown if he'd take 3 million if we want to go that way. Maybe there'd be an Evander Kane situation where someone will take less to build their value in our top six

That's is exactly, we agree I think.

The decision was made to get a $4M player this year and to fit him under the cap by shifting $3.25M to next year.

That is a decision to sacrifice next year to get the bump this year, there is no other ways to look at it. The Oilers are paying $3M+ next year for something that gives them value this year.

It remains to be seen if he is a $4M player this year and that is the gamble Edmonton knowingly took.
