No He was not.

This thread needs clearly more MM MVP vibes:

So there is already a pissing contest and they haven’t been drafted by an NHL yet . That’s usually when things get crazier. Perhaps they will both be drafted by teams that have disinterested fan bases.

Either way these kids are BOTH incredible talents and I am not going to bother to vote since there is no “all the above” option.

One will be drafted by Calgary and the other by Vancouver...

I sure hope not.

I mean, it would be nice in one sense that they’d be in Western Canada and I could see them live often, but sickening to think of them playing for the Flames and Canucks.

For sure bro..PK is as close as you can get to generational..Love him. Marner the same..But fanboys here are pumping CB and Michkov as the next Crosby/McDavid/OVs and aint likeley happening unless they grow a bit.

I see these guys more as comparable to some of the best of the current generation. Michkov is Matthews, but a lot smaller. Wright is similar to Eichel. I don’t think they play similar, but I think Bedard has the best chance to be as good as McDavid from this current generation. He may end up more comparable in the NHL to MacKinnnon, although as I’ve said before that I see some MacKinnon in how Lambert plays. What I would not expect is Crosby/Ovechkin/Malkin out of these guys. They might vary from the comparisons and levels I mentioned, but I think people are using way too lofty barometers.

Maybe true, but a generational tag usually isn’t given for players who have such a major obstacle in their game.

You have a valid point.

It depends on how much strength he builds as he grows older.

Martin St.Louis was shorter than him and won 2 Art Ross, 1 Hart, and 1 Pearson trophy cause he had a strong core and lower-body strength.

Now take that type of player (assuming Bedard focuses on his strength) and give him generational skills. I could see someone like that dominating the league for years especially in the modern NHL.

One of them will be drafted by SJ & the other by Pittsburgh. Look at how old Burns, Couture, Vlasic, Karlsson and Kane will be in the 22-23 season
and the same goes for Pittsburgh look at how old their core will be in the 22-23 season.
Pitt will intentionally tank for Bedard or Michkov the same way they did for Crosby/Malkin and how they tanked for Lemieux in the 80s.

From my limited viewings I’ll go with Bedard. He seems like more of a play driver. I definitely see some McDavid/Mackinon in him. Michkov wasn’t as noticeable but still managed to put up multiple points in every game I watched which is a skill in itself. Both are elite prospects.

Im flipping tables if Edmonton or Pittsburgh get either of these guys. How many Generational players do two franchises need??

It looks like Michkov is going to play bigger role at the WJC, than Bedard. So far he's 1+1, and Bedard is with zero points.

Probably, but the tournament hasn’t started. Bedard might earn the time and run with it.

As fan I would be thrilled to get either guy and so would every NHL fanbase.

2023 is going to be a great draft cycle to follow. two franchise altering players sitting atop the board.

while i think that bedard will likely be given the edge on draft day due to michkov’s contract and positional consideration, both are undoubtedly players i would love to have in my organization. brilliant players. rooting for both of them. i hope to see a gold medal game between them.

Assuming these guys go top 2 (likely, but there's still a long time until the draft), I think they're probably the most stylistically similar 1/2 picks since ... Hall/Seguin maybe?

For me the main differences are:
  • Pace and north/south vs. east/west
    • Although they're both very creative, unpredictable players, Bedard plays a more north/south game, plays with a tonne of pace and is constantly pressuring defenders with his speed
      • He's very elusive, but does it mostly while bearing down on defenders with quick, subtle moves
    • Michkov is more likely to "slow it down", and to play a bit more east west
      • Can still burn and pressure guys with speed, but he's more likely to slow things down, wait for things to open up, and then exploit gaps with perfect timing
    • Overall I'd say Bedard's style here is a bit more like McDavid, while Michkov is a bit more like Kane
  • Hockey IQ
    • Both elite, and both somewhat goalscorer heavy, but IMO Michkov's hockey IQ is even better than Bedard's
    • Related to the above, Bedard is very aggressive in his attack, but sometimes he'd be better off slowing things down or making a simple pass to open up or wait for space
    • Michkov is unreal at manipulating space, he finds and creates gaps for himself and teammates crazy well
  • Strength/physicality
    • Same height, but Bedard is stockier and stronger
    • Neither are really hitters, but Bedard is more about getting guys off balance with his speed and skill, then powering through any contact on his way to the net, while Michkov is more slight of build, more about creating space with his smarts so the contact is minimal regardless
    • Bedard a bit more like Marchand here (doesn't hit like Marchand, but does power through contact with the puck similarly), while Michkov is a bit more like Marner
  • Shot
    • Both have excellent shots, but I'd give Bedard a decent edge here
    • Bedard's shot has been compared a lot to Matthews', and I agree - power, accuracy, quick release, and that amazing ability to change the angle dramatically when releasing
    • Michkov has quite a good shot too, good power and great accuracy, just not as exceptional as Bedard's
Overall, it's just really hard to pick. I think Bedard has the edge on physical tools and raw skills, but Michkov's hockey IQ is so damn special. But both are strong to elite at pretty much every offensive skill/ability, very little to criticize in either's game other than size. I think Michkov has been having the better season to date, but I also think Bedard has been quite snakebitten, creating a TONNE of offence, just not putting up as many points as you'd hope. For now I'm gonna punt on putting one ahead of the other, they're too close!
