Very close, but for a career I pick Celebrini because of the fact that the Sharks are building a much better team around him than Chicago around Bedard.

The timing for these comparisons are a little unfair in that Bedard is slumping and Celebrini is playing out of his mind––recency bias will always creep into these discussions in unavoidable ways.

But I do think these conversations and comparisons should be less of a knock on Bedard (who is a very special talent) and more of a knock on the lack of hype around Celebrini. It should have been obvious what kind of an exceptional prospect Celebrini was, yet a good number of people around here and in the media seemed to think he was more of a middle-of-the-road first overall.

Connor Bedard is an amazing talent skill wise but he lacks in the areas of size (strength) and defensive ability thus far in his career. It depends on who can round out their game more. To be fair though the Blackhawks have a horrific roster and I actually think San Jose has done a good job turning the corner and setting their team up to show some solid improvement in the next few seasons. It's hard to bet against the potential of Connor Bedard.

Really just playing darts in the dark here with this. Basically comes down to whether Bedard will be able to round out the rest of his game or whether his lack of some physical tools like size will continue to hold him back in that respect. Also heavily contingent on whether the Blackhawks or Sharks "rebuild" comes off more successfully. Right now, it's kind of looking like the Sharks may have gotten it more right, but prospects and development is hardly linear...so that could very easily change. But that "team success" ultimately tends to play a big factor in how their "franchise player" is viewed overall.

Reminds me a bit of Eichel vs Matthews in terms of prospects. Eichel/Bedard is flashier and had more hype while the more all-around game and subtle things that lead to being an analytics monster from Matthews/Celebrini is harder to appreciate at first.

Celebrini looks like a more of a Barkov/Hischier guy who plays all situations very well with good production

Bedard is maybe like a Patrick Kane, who will have a lot of goals and be at the top point producers for years to come but probably not the guy you want on the PK.

Both a good and at this point its who you put around these two players that factors in the most.

Barkov without Reinhart isn't as that great
Kane without Toews isn't as great
Ovechkin without Backstrom isn't that great.

This is the correct answer.

Celebrini's comparable was Toews defense and Captain of a winner attitude with more offense. But he was still kinda skipped over for the "possible Megatalent" media coverage often extended to undisputed first overall prospects with nobody else even close in the discussion. As such, he was quietly underrated.

Bedard was given the Lemieux/McDavid generational comparison treatment and he should have been compared more with Patrick Kane, who at his peak was amazing. its no knock to compare him to prime Patrick Kane. Its an enormous compliment.

Celebrini’s sample size is small, but he already shows so much skill in all 3 zones I think he carves out a better career. Bedard is the better offensive player, but Celebrini will have a greater impact for his team.

He just won rookie of the year with one of the best D+1 scoring seasons in recent memory. His struggles right now aren't 3 points in 15 games. He's a proven top 6 scorer in the NHL and is only 19 years old. Hard to believe he won't be scoring 100+ points and 40+ goals during his prime, if not sooner.
