Confirmed- play-in counts as playoff stats, do you see any records falling?

So apparently these play-in series, while not counting for the playoffs for trades, will be recorded as playoff stats, answering one of the questions I had. Do any of these records stand a chance seeing as some teams will potentially get an extra 5+ games?

Most goals:

Jarri Kurri, Reggie Leach- 19

Most assists: Wayne Gretzky-31

Most points: Wayne Gretzky-47

Most Pim: Chris Nilan- 141

Most goalie wins- 16 (of course if any of the play-in teams wins the Cup this record will probably fall)

Nope. I don't think the champions will end up playing any more games than usual if they do best of 5 in first 2 rounds.

Even if they do play an extra 5 games, still no.

Who cares to be honest. No-one in their right mind will take any new record seriously, if an extra 3-5 games were utilized to get into the playoffs in the first place.

Example: McDavid scores 5 goals in 4 games against the Hawks (a team that normally wouldn't have even sniffed the playoffs), and then ultimately finishes the playoffs with 20 goals. No-one with more than half a brain would truly consider that the record.

I don't think there's any way they count it as playoffs, but that goal record of 19 has been in jeopardy for a while. 14 or 15 goals has been done 9 times since the 2004/05 lockout. Scheifele and Couture both hit 14 the last 2 playoffs and they never even played in the SCF. That's well within striking range of the record of 19. I think Gretzky's assists and points records are much more safe.

I could see Sid, Malkin, Kane, or one of the Edmonton duo beat 19 goals if they have a deep run (30ish games)

Why not? When the playoffs expanded initially from 2 rounds, the records all fell from extra games, but they were still the new records. Leach's 19 goal playoff came when the playoffs had a best of 3 preliminary round where his Flyers ended up with a bye, so they only played in 3 rounds, and Kurri's came in 4 rounds, but a best of 5 first round, but Kurri is still the co-holder. Context will always be needed for records, but it shouldn't stop the records from falling. Just as scoring 200 points in the regular season today would be better than anything Gretzky did, but wouldn't get your name on the regular season scoring record.

That’s a fair point, in which case it gets tricky when considering the teams played, since as I mentioned, beating up on a team like Chicago does not deserve nearly the same type of praise as would in a normal post-season.

Honestly, I suppose it’ll just have to sort itself out first, because it’s still pretty unlikely for any to be broken. If it happens, the debates will have some merit once having the info needed to analyze the points/goals etc

And look at all the goalie win records that have fallen ever since the SO was introduced.

This is really dumb.

1.) you can’t have it both ways. These stats can’t be playoff stats, and then say teams didn’t qualify for the playoffs.

2.) bonuses are based on regular season. Can’t just cut off the regular season, lose millions in bonuses and then just “whoops now these are playoff games” players will fight it

This is a huge one for me; this could have a huge impact on salaries and next year's cap. Also what about the bonus pool? Like how is that going to get divided?

Whaaat? Why would the play-in stats count but not the seeding round robin stats for the top four seeds? That’d be dumb

I'm not advocating for this, but it would be a reasonable argument to make that the play-in stats count because teams are eliminated from Stanley Cup contention during those games, while the seeding round robin stats do not count because teams are not eliminated.

I suppose if the Oilers play 30+ games McDavid Drai have a shot

Well the maximum number of games any team can play is 32 over the five rounds and although I haven't looked but when was the last time a SC champion played in even close to 28 games under the 7X4 format?

Boston played three 7 game series in their 2011 SC wins but the 4th series was a sweep so that was 25 out of a possible 28 games.

That being said maybe Crosby puts up more points/goals than Ovi in 2018 and then the apologists will bring up per game crap.........
