So, I don't know if this has been discussed here already, but I had an interesting discussion yesterday during Canada vs USA Women's hockey game.

We were wondering, checking aside, what would be a comparable level of play to the women's olympics in a men's league?

Some said something like midget AAA, other mentioned High School Prep league.

What do you guys think?

I doubt they play full contact in those tune up games, but I also doubt the women are giving 100% effort.
I wasn't talking about contact itself, but more about physical strength.

The effort part is probably true though. But it could be said the same for the other team like any exhibition game.

When mens/boys teams play agaisnt women's teams, they play with women's rules (ie: no hitting)

Like previously mentioned, they have mixed results against midget AA/AAA teams.

Just from experience, when I was younger and playing midget AA, we played against a women's provincial u-21 team that ended up having a few future women that played for Team Canada. These women were considered the best of the best under the age of 21 in Ontario (obviously not on par as a whole to what the Olympic Team would be though) . We ended up beating them pretty badly (8-1 or something)

A bit old already, but some incomplete results from Team Finland's tours against top U15 boys just before and after Vancouver:

2:6 @ Jokipojat, Joensuu
0:6 @ KalPa, Kuopio
1:3 @ Jokerit, Helsinki

3:2 @ Lukko, Rauma
0:13 @ Ässät, Pori
2:10 @ Blues, Espoo
3:11 @ HIFK, Helsinki

6:3 @ K-Vantaa, Vantaa
2:10 @ HPK, Hämeenlinna
0:11 @ Kärpät, Oulu
2:12 @ JYP, Jyväskylä
0:11 @ TPS, Turku
1:6 @ Tappara, Tampere

1:10 @ Jokerit, Helsinki
3:12 @ HIFK, Helsinki
0:7 @ Ilves, Tampere
1:8 @ Tappara, Tampere
0:8 @ Ässät, Pori
2:8 @ Ketterä, Imatra
2:7 @ JYP, Jyväskylä
1:8 @ Pelicans, Lahti
0:17 @ Kärpät, Oulu

Yeah like people have said it would be really low, but I can tell you that the women's hockey at the olympics so far this year is way better than the trash the men are putting out there!

If hitting were allowed, I don't think women would beat 13 year old AAA teams, without hitting 15/16 year old AA/AAA seems about right.
I mean women are probably bigger than 13-year-olds, and 13-year-olds are just beginning to enter checking hockey... So I really doubt that :P

That makes no sense at all...

Your saying that the women's level is relative to a low mens level (say midget age). But are way better than the Olympic teams full of players from the next best league's out of the NHL?

The men's tournament has been entertaining and very competitive. Whereas for the women's all you have to watch is the two games that involve both Canada and USA. So I am not sure what you mean by your comment..

Let me put it this way, watch the games that don't involve the USA or Canadian women's teams. The games not involving them have been fast paced, close, spirited, and generally enjoyable affairs.

The men's game? Laugher blowouts or painfully slow slogs full of sloppy goaltending and lackluster play.

13 year olds in general. sure.

The best 13 year olds playing on the best 13 year old teams, it's probably similar as an average, except all 13 year old teams will have a few guys in the 6'2 nearing 200+lb range, not many (or any) women exist like that.

I don't know about nearing 200+ pounds

Are you trolling or really saying that Korea- Japan women's game is faster paced than any men's game?

Check your reading comprehension I said fast paced not faster. The Japan and Korea game kept the flow back and forth up and down the ice with many scoring opportunities. Now contrast that with Finland vs Norway game today. Norway hardly did anything all and Finland didn't do much besides skate around with the puck in their own end and center ice before they finally decided to take it to Norway in the third. The game was slow paced, boring, and a chore to watch. Even the Finnish fans were getting tired of Finland's deliberate slow pace.

The Canadian Women's Olympic team played a series of warm-up games against AAA teams in the Alberta Midget Hockey League. 2 points were on the line for the boys teams so each game had potential playoff implications.

The Women's team did really well, going 13 - 4 - 5 in those games from the results I could find.

So I'd say they're about the level of a really good Midget AAA boys team from an above average association. This is the league Danny Heatly, Ray Whitney, Jerome Iginla among others played in.

Because Finland is a much better team so it's obvious they hold the puck more and Norway can't do much but defend. Still men's hockey has more close games than women's hockey has, also more contenders for medals which makes all the games already more interesting and worth to watch. It's pretty weird to call men's game like this:
Laugher blowouts or painfully slow slogs full of sloppy goaltending and lackluster play.
when in fact all of the teams in men's hockey in this tournament can legitimately compete against any other team which we saw in USA - Slovenia & Russia - Slovakia games, unlike in women's hockey where we already know before the tournament which teams win gold and silver so it's not even fun to watch to be completely honest.

This is a weird discussion, as the level of play has pretty much been answered. We can see what level the women are at compared to men by noting who they play against to prepare for the tournament.

As for entertainment, that's a different thing as it is much more subjective. While the 2014 Canadian women's team would stand a 0% chance of beating the 2014 Canadian men's team, the men didn't play a single game that was nearly as entertaining as the gold medal game that the women played in. I would say that on average the men's games are more enjoyable but both can easily be enjoyed.

A good B league adult team / average A league team would likely wipe the floor with the top women's teams. (Though this depends on your region)

In my old beer league there were a handful of girls who played D1 big East and they weren't a factor despite being great skaters with excellent puck skills.
