It might be better if we compared favourably to a blue line that was actually good.

I don't really see much of a difference myself. And Matheson might be better in his own end than Rielly so...

Matheson < Rielly
Guhle = Muzzin
Edmundson = Brodie
Harris = Giordano
Savard = Sandin
Wideman/Xhekaj = Holl
I only agree with Reilly. All their other Ds are better than us. Those Ds have a proven track record, ours have none.

Call me bias but I will take all 6/6 Habs over leafs here.

Leafs D is brutal IMO

Yes and they have a lot of miles on them too. Guhle can skate circles around all their top 4 except Reilly who can’t defend. Of course Guhle must be allowed to make mistakes as he learns

Are you saying Matheson is better than Reilly?

Four of the dmen who played for the Habs last night now have a total of 18 NHL games.

Maybe b/f for later in the year?

Unrelated, the oldest dmen in the league, now that Zdeno Chara has retired:

Mark Giordano 39
Ryan Suter 37
Brent Burns 37
Alex Goligoski 37
Alex Edler 36

The only guys over 35

Pretty sure I didn’t. Here’s the comparison. Matheson is way better vs the rush but they were similar in their own end last season with their respective systems and teammates and in their roles. Rielly is light years a better passer, skater and puck manager, but shooting is similar.

Matheson way better with his stick defensively.

Anyway Matheson out 8 weeks which is a huge blow to our D.

You’re bias.

No lol.
I mean if you give both teams identical forwards, goalies and coaches, I say we win with our defence over theirs. Our squad is tougher and plays with more intensity.

Matheson will keep up with Reilly. Guhle will outshine Muzzin. Edmundson and Brodie cancel each other out. Harris and Gio cancel each other out. Give me Savard over sandin. And jackeye will knock holl out.

That statement works both ways....Our young D may prove to be better in relatively short order.

You are probably somewhat correct but Guhle could pass all of them other than Reilly as soon as this season and Matheson may very well already be better than all of them other than Reilly. A healthy Edmundson is better than most of them as well and Savard is on par or better than Holl, Sandin and Giordano.

I take Montreal's stable of dmen easily over Toronto's in a couple of years....maybe as soon as next season. Reilly is also very overrated as he struggles defensively and his stats are inflated by Mathews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander.

The Habs are far more mobile and far more physical. All of Sandin, Muzzin and Giordano are below average skaters and I expect Brodie to soon enter that category with the beating that he takes. Liljegren is a strong skater and we need to include him as he is hurt right now but I think he is a bottom pairing dman on most good teams as he doesn't have much offence and doesn't play very physical.

In recent years not having a great defense has costs Toronto some early playoff exits. Look at years we overachieved in playoffs? Weber and the Four Horsemen of '21. Subban in '14, Markov and rookie Subban of '10.
