Anybody remember in 02 when SRC had a labor dispute and the habs/bruins playoff series were broadcasted without commentary?

I actually think that I would prefer watching the game with crowd noise and no commentary. Anybody else enjoy it back then?

Yes. I'd like an option to hear just the sound as miked at ice level and crowd noise.

I'd like to be given the choice.

Sometimes, I feel like having commentaries.

I usually listen to the commentary if I like the commentators. if I don't like them I listen to music.

YES!!! This was the absolute best. It's probably the best hockey watching experience I've had while watching TV.

You actually feel like you're in the game. You hear exactly what you hear if you were at the game; the crowd, the players, the hits, shots, music etc without all the annoying blabbering of some hack announcer and colour commentator

It was truly awesome. I found it was a much more authentic experience.

There were little stretches were it was almost silent and others where you could really feel the growing excitement of the crowd. The contrasts between those instants made the whole thing fantastic.

You can! Depends on how the station mixes the sound.

If you have a surround sound setup, simply mute (or unplug) your center speaker and voila! Works for sure on CBC. RDS likes to mix it to both front speakers.

For stereo, an inverse phase mix between left and right will remove the common elements between the two. If you do this, you'll only get a mono output though. I found this out by accident about 10 years back when my brother connected his sound system incorrectly and songs didn't have vocals when we turned it on. Took some time to figure that one out.

Memories! If I remember correctly, there was absolutely no change in ratings either.

I still like commentaries, but the guys should talk much less and the sound from the arena (crowd+ice) should be higher.

Still romanticising it 12 years later myself. Wish there was an option for this with the more modern cable boxes.

Me and a friend talk about this all the time, we where legal drinking age and we used to get loaded and watch these game it was awesome I would love no commentary, my commentary when i'm watching the game is hilarious, I usually mute the games on cbc and put music on anyways

I know! I mention this to friends/family once in a while... I usually like CBC's commentators, but games on RDS I wish 1. they didn't almost mute the on-ice sounds 2. there would be no commentators. Unless it's Dubé/McGuire.

What?

I thought it was the whole PBP as a job that was exposed cause a lot of people thought "hey wait a minute, it's good without commentary!".

There's nobody feeding you their opinions, you just make up your mind by what you see. There's no tight-butt moron saying "oh this is disgraceful!".

The problem with the PBP is that it comes from the time when games were on the radio. And probably most of the PBP guys got their first job on the radio before switching to TV. When it's on TV, we don't need as much detail as they give right now.

I'm fine with two guys talking, but it should be the two of them analyzing the game at a slightly higher level, analyzing replays, giving color commentary etc.
