Looked bad to me, 2 games seems about right. Como's a live wire. I love his intensity, but he is wreckless.

Better make all boarding calls 2 game suspensions now. What a joke, especially for someone with no priors.

That was a standard 2 minute penalty and nothing more.

Its so hard to understand Shanaban's way of thinking...

2 games for Comeau but not even a call for Shaws forarm shiver to Nikki's melon? We see this exact play at least once a game.

I agree here. Smith even bounced right up and shoved Comeau (who dove after. I admit) Yes I know that doesn't always make it right just because he was OK, but it wasn't malicious and he didn't absolutely destroy him. 2 minutes.

No issue with 2 games. He lines him up from behind on the numbers on drove him into the boards. For goodness sake he's chasing him from behind to make that hit. Reckless play.

I can't recall seeing that play once a game to be honest.

Having said that, yes I am in for consistency.

The fact that this is good for 2 games but the LA Kings player that punches a dude after the whistle is only 1 game just baffles me.

Whatever, it's only Blake Comeau so no huge loss.

textbook boarding. dangerous hit. not sure how anyone can argue a suspension isn't warranted

He has no priors. That alone should warrant it being a warning, fine, or 1 game maximum.

It was deemed only worth 2 minutes by the on-ice officials.

Smith was not injured in the play.

Not pinning this on Shanahan's Detroit roots, but the NHL really needs to have a person in charge of punishments and player safety who is NOT affiliated with any NHL teams. First it was Campbell and the Bruins, now it is Shanahan and Detroit. Get rid of any possible allegations or rumors by employing someone who is from outside of the hockey world.

Can someone explain to me how cross-checking a guy in the ribs after he scores (MacKenzie) isn't even a penalty, but this gets a 2 game suspension?

Because the two have absolutely nothing to do with one another?

It was so bad they only called a 2 minute penalty and smith jumped right up and came over and crosschecked him and didn't miss a shift. And no history of this stuff, that's a BS suspension. What about Shaw on Nikitin?? Not even a review with the league. No consistency whatsoever from the league on these suspensions. I don't think it should even be up for review unless they call it a 5 minute major on the ice.

Boarding penalty....no question. 2 game ban...questionable to my mind simply because on any given night there are multiple hits like this that don't even get reviewed. The inconsistency Shanahan displays creates the confusion. Nonetheless, welcome back Cam!

It was a very dangerous play, so I think 2 games is appropriate. Doesn't hurt the Jackets any because we're so deep.

Yes it was reckless. However, what Dustin Brown did to Ryan Murray was also reckless and wasn't even considered for a suspension by the league, and that's a guy with a history. The same question can be raised for Shaw's hit on Nikitin last week. For Comeau, with 407 clean games to his name, to get 2 games for what the ref (standing 3 feet away) called a 2 minute minor is a bit ridiculous. In addition, the guy wasn't hurt in the slightest...but I guess they only take that into consideration when its convenient for them and when it makes the incident more damning.

I'm not saying the officials are infallible but we all have seen worse incidents go unpunished or lighter than 2 games. It is what it is, but the inconsistency by the NHL makes me reach for the antacids.

I think the only available justification is that similar textbook dangerous plays have gone unsuspended before, some of which vicitimized our team.

That said, I'm not an advocate of the theory of "two wrongs make a right", either.

Exactly, this call and punishment are correct. The other decisions cited (Brown, Shaw, etc.) may or may not be, but that has nothing to do with this individual incident.

Here's the NHL's explanation of the suspension (from Puckrakers):

"As Smith plays the puck up the ice, Comeau finishes him into the boards, from behind and with significant force, causing a violent collision. It’s important to note that Smith does not turn his back just prior to or simultaneous with the hit, and that Comeau sees his numbers for some time. Therefore the onus is on Comeau to avoid this hit or at the very least minimize its force. Instead, he tracks Smith and drive him forcefully into the boards from behind.

The league said it took into account that Comeau has no prior fines or suspensions in his 407-game career with the Islanders, Flames and Blue Jackets."

Then give Kronwall two games for his viscous cross check to the back of Dmac after he scored.

Dmac was on his knees in a vulnerable position and his neck snapped back like a swivel.

Add that BS cross check Detroit put on Mckenzie after he scored, no call. Bottom line there is no respect for the Jackets. What is this our third or fourth player suspension in the last 2 or 3 years? Thinking we must be on double secret probation with Shanny. Ah heck maybe he was peeved we beat his team.
