OT: Columbus Thread VII (Convo and Questions About Columbus for Visitors and Locals)

Shut up about the Vine Street garage. We’ve been parking there since day 1.

Neil Ave garage is my go to

As for the burger conversation, The Rail in Dublin has been my fave for a while. But over the last year I’ve cut out eating out all together and have been cooking all my meals instead so idk if the quality has gone down at all.

We tried BareBurger last night. It was fine...unimpressed despite the great reviews and the service on a quiet night was disappointing.

On a side note, I have been wearing earplugs to the games this season which has been good because Nationwide's sound system is too F'n loud but I hate that I can't hear a damn thing my companions say to me. Last night I decided to try my noise canceling headphones instead and they were much better, muffled the noise enough so my eardrums were not blown out but could hear enough to hold a conversation with my wife and also hear what was going on inside the arena. Yay noise canceling Bose earbuds!

If there is ever an offseason vote on biggest nerd on HF CBJ, somebody will need to remember this post. :naughty:
My parents met in tOSU's on-campus computer lab in the late 70s. I will take on any and all challengers.

;)

You merely adopted the nerd. I was born in it... molded by it...

Aren’t you supposed to rebel against your nerd parents somewhat and at least do one cool thing? I mean I rebelled against my 70s programming on cards in large university computer lab dad. I have my nerd side, but I also have done plenty of cool things like bum around multiple continents.

PS: glad the umbrellas are back

Nah, my childhood rebellion was to reject my father's attempts to teach me Emacs and Perl and ultimately become a Vim-using Pythonista instead.

(And yeah, Papa did punchcards too. That was how he got Mom's attention - she was an operator curious about who was naming their programs after Disney characters.)

EDIT: Oh, and there was also the ultimate betrayal of my father's values. My father's career got started with DEC; he used their stuff everywhere and was pretty fiercely loyal. Meanwhile, my preferred systems became (and still are, to this day) Thinkpads - which were, as everyone knows, a computer brand of IBM. He was moderately horrified. (I think he finally forgave me a couple years ago. ;) )

2 CBJ free tickets to the Scott’s Turf Terrace tonight.

It’s the very top of the arena (300) but easy access to bathrooms and concessions. If you can use them, send me a message with email address or phone number to forward them!

On The Island where doggy was just a Puppy and hitting up my bagel and pizza places. For those that think there is good pizza in Columbus, you guys haven’t had a slice of heaven. This is a slice…and two knots 😊

I'm glad you like it but that looks like yard clumps to me lol
Not a fan of spinach? Crust is neither thin nor thick, crunchy and chewy and not greasy like NYC slices can be. Not swamped with sauce but lots of topping and cheese that doesn’t come off as one big piece on the first bite.

And you know they will put any topping you want on it if you don’t like spinach. Customized slice by slice.

Ohio has become a serious pickleball hub in the Midwest and Columbus is leading the way. In addition to all the outdoor public courts being built all over the greater metro area (Dublin, New Albany, Powell, and UA is having a grand opening right about now), there are currently three substantial indoor clubs in the Columbus metro area:
  • Pickle Shack in Delaware has ten dedicated courts
  • Pickle & Chill on Henderson Road in Columbus has twelve indoor and ten outdoor courts
  • Paddle Taps in Worthington was the newest entry with 16 indoor courts
Those three clubs combined will only equal the project being developed on the East Side out past Whitehall. Match Point plans to have 38 indoor courts. Assuming nobody completes a bigger project in the meantime, that would make it the largest pickleball club in the county (probably the world).

Columbus "hosts" the Columbus Sliders MLP pro pickleball team featuring Columbus' home grown pro CJ Klinger. And this weekend (May 1-4 2025) the city will be hosting a Major League Pickleball event so all the pros are in town (at Pickle & Chill). There is also Camden Chaffin who is from Columbus, he's just 13 but ranked in the top twenty of up and comers (all the other kids on the list are 16-23 years old...so yeah, pretty impressive).

Pickleball is not only a great activity for locals to play but it also should bring in tourist dollars. Picklers visiting town are always looking for places to play...a chance to try their skills against new people but also bigger money into the economy when these tournaments come to town. Even The Arnold hosts a pickleball tournament now.

Cincinnati has done a great job building courts, have an amazing public complex right down by the Ohio River. That's 18 dedicated courts at Sawyer Point. They also host a major APP tournament and one of the premier PPA stops at the Mason Tennis Center. They also have two clubs with 11 dedicated courts and a new club with 17 courts coming online soon.

Cleveland lags behind in terms of private clubs (there is one in Avon Lake that has 15 courts) but there are lots of new public dedicated courts and the city has hosted a major amateur tournament at the Cleveland Convention Center downtown the last couple years setting up 24 indoor courts for a December weekend of fun.
