Right now the whole story is that he has 6 goals in 7 games and we gave up the 2nd to trade him.

Waddell needed to hold out for more. Just like with Jiricek.
Hold out for more? Laine literally rejected one trade (to Minnesota). He had a NMC. And the team wanted him gone, and everybody knew it. Waddell’s hands were tied.

Jiricek situation I agree with you on though.

  • if Laine wasn't leave, Waddell wouldn't trade him
  • he has 6 goals in 7 games with big %SH, yes for a player who didn't play one year and had similar problems it is great but that is all (btw, I look at stats, two goals were in 5v3)
  • let's not forget that he played with Werenski here on the PP, who is more of a sniper here, Hutson is a classic quarterback in the Habs, I'm sure Marchenko, Chinakhov and Johnson would have scored more goals with him
  • everybody can comment his play in the end of the season not now when we will see how he played in 5v5
  • Patrik is not a Jacket more, so please, to another thread

Nice job coming back and making it a game. Would have liked to see an answer after the first or second goal to keep it close.

Pulling Greaves was definitely the right move, but the way the Jackets were playing, would have liked to keep it 5 on 5 just to avoid the inevitable ENG, and keep it a one goal lead. I think they still had a good chance at tying it.

His hands weren't tied though. He always had the option of telling Laine that teams weren't willing to take him unless the Jackets added an asset to move him, and that such a move wasn't going to happen.

For the record, I wish Patty the best as a man, but I dont miss him as a player at all.

That said, when does what you said ever happen really? He had a NTC, plus he could have just stayed in the players assistance program. He had all the cards.

  • Tampa is a strong opponent. I like that we didn't give up. I think that's what's important, to fight until the end. The team has character. That's basic. Now we just have to eliminate the stupid mistakes.
  • I believe Adam's goal will help him, he has good teammates.
  • I hope Chinny will be back soon, JvR is trying, but the first line is not his anymore
  • Provorov and Paul's and especially Guentzel's goals...
  • I like Johnson more and more.
  • I think scouts are underrating Voronkov.

We don't really hear about trades that don't happen or when players aren't moved. Yes Laine could have blocked virtually any trade, but that doesn't mean you have to trade him. If he blocks the best trade, tell him that you won't move him then and he can deal with things in his own way. Keep the pick. Waddell isn't out there to make friends or do people favors, he is there to maximize value and assemble as much talent on the roster as possible. Win and players will want to be here. Lose and they won't.

So, are you implying that trade requests dont leak? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but that would require completely useless agents.

I am not implying that, no. What I am stating is that a trade request is not an ultimatum. If you keep a player who has made a trade request, it is not the end of the world. And if the rest of the players are professionals, they'll know how to tune out a malcontent.

At the end of the day, this isn't about personalities. It's a matter of contracts and CBA rights. Of which players under contract virtually have none.

Ask the Rangers how they are doing with a hard nosed GM who has a suck it up buttercup attitude...this is also how you get stuck with everyone who signs in your organization demanding an NMC that could cripple you down the road 4-5 years from now.
