If we take a quick look at PuckPedia's Perri Pick Value calculator, it’s clear MTL and CBJ could be great trade partners for this.

In 2025, MTL holds their own 2nd-round pick and PITT’s (currently projected around 40th and 49th overall) which roughly equals the value of a late first-rounder. (i.e. 2021 CAR 40th & 51st OA for 27th to NASH)

Meanwhile, CBJ owns MINN’s 2025 1st, projected around 20th overall.

If MTL adds CBJ’s 2026 2nd, the combined value comes close to that 20OA pick. (i.e. 2024 MTL 26th, 57th, & 198th for LA’s 21st)

Now, three 2nds for 20OA may seem steep to some (especially since MTL would be doing CBJ a favor). So, it’s fair to assume there might be a “favor premium” involved if we look at Hughes’ past deals. CBJ could sweeten the pot by swapping some later round picks positioning or throwing in a 5th or something else in there.

But at this stage of their rebuild, if I'm MTL I would be all over this. 3 picks in the top 20 could allow them to swing big in a separate trade (either up the draft, or for an established/young 2C.)

Probably ask for Jackets first instead.
 
That reads more like "we have a couple first round picks and are gonna use them to make a deal to add a player to the roster" like he's been saying for awhile now

Not "we're gonna use our first to get our second back so we can send out an OS" which would be a complete misuse of assets.

The Holloway and broberg offer sheets were so brilliant because a) Edmonton had limited cap space and b) at the time offered more then what they were presently worth but knew they had upside and their play would likely match or exceed the caphits. Oh and c) targeting a new gm who last name is bowman and thought was the smartest man in the room and let them walk

I may be wrong, but I don't think any offer sheets have been signed by arbitration eligible RFAs. So, I would assume that if there are any offer sheets this summer, it will be for a non-arb eligible RFA.

Some of these players will be signed before July 1st, and some aren't good enough to attract an offer sheet.

Also keep in mind that with the rising cap, many teams will have the cap space to match.

Knies, Bourque and Samoskevich really the only ones where there could be a threat imo
 
The only way CBJ goes back to Montreal to request the 2026 CBJ 2nd is once they hit free agency and they have a deal in place for an offer sheet. There is no chance in hell they make a deal on speculation of an offer sheet. There is still risk because to submit an offersheet and have it signed still requires a 7 day match period and could all be for naught. I just don't see that type of asset management. Instead, I would think it would be a much, much bigger approach that would involve multiple 1sts as part of the offer sheet, or as someone else said, a deal around a 1st and 3rd, which CBJ has both in 2026.

He needs his 2nd back to offer sheet. Can't acquire a different 2nd to do it.

I just don't see it happening unless the Jackets don't value this draft much.

And IMO, on top of what I said before, I think the Habs would have to add a roster player.

Would be interesting move though. Maybe MTL removes their 2025 2nd from the transaction and replace it with Kirby Dach? Other posters insinuated about getting a roster player that's ready now; maybe they'd be willing to gamble at Dach same way they gambled for Monahan.

So revised would be:

MTL:
Jackets' 1st (+/- 10OA)

CBJ:
Dach
2025 PITT's 2nd (+/- 40OA)
2026 CBJ"s 2nd

That would sure be an interesting turn of events. MTL having that 2nd round pick could help them move up on one of their then 3 picks. (10OA, 16OA, and 17OA).

CBJ keeps the 20OA pick to draft, adds Dach, and tries to be successful at an offersheet; not a bad start to the offseason.

Question becomes, does MTL sees enough value in the 10-20 range this year to warrant the cost.

I’m not sure this whole premise makes sense but if they absolutely need their 2026 2nd and don’t value 2025 draft much, I think something around CBJ 2025 1st for Calgary/Mtl 2025 1st + CBJ 2026 2nd + later pick might make sense.

Me neither tbh; was just trying to capture what kind of value would be needed.

Obviously a bigger splash to land an actual player instead of question marks 3-5 years out into the future considering the age range of their core with whom they might want to compete now. They do have a lot of UFAs at forward.

But even now thinking back, I think Dach + those 2 2nds might not quite be market value, if I were them I'd probably ask to swap 20OA with 16/17OA if they put 10OA on the table, lets them try to climb back up the board in the 11-14 range if there's a guy they really want using that 2025 2nd from PITT.

Dach would be sliding in nicely on the wing in their middle six right away + whomever they offersheet (if successful) would also likely be in their top 6.

I don’t see a good reasoning for Columbus to spend a first to acquire back their 2nd to make an offer sheet.

If they REALLY want it back because they have a done deal in place for an offer sheet it’ll likely be for Montreal to move up the draft.

Something like #16 + 26’ CLB 2nd for #11.
