He was done when he didn't fix Carson Wentz
Ballard, the GM is also the one that has rolled with Rivers, Wentz, and Ryan in the 3 seasons following the Luck unexpected retirement in which he had to just roll with Brisset.

I would argue he did a overall decent job in a terrible situation with Luck retiring on him and QB issues ever since

10-6 (1-1 in playoffs) in 2018
7-9 in 2019
11-5 (0-1 in playoffs) in 2020
9-8 in 2021
3-5-1 in 2022

40-33-1

Certainly, don't think this stint in Indy will be damaging to his reputation and he will get another shot somewhere as HC

Surprised today he is axed while several others are still coaching

If you fired all 13 coaches with 3 or less wins: Broncos, Raiders, Browns, Steelers, Colts, Jags, Texans, Rams, Cards, Bears, Lions, Saints, Panthers.

Tomlin is safe. But he needs to fire the OC. Jags will roll with Pederson again. Bears after a rough start with Field not throwing. The ball much has settled in. Rams, McVay not getting fired. Everyone else can be and maybe should be.

Wentz was his guy and went that failed, he was on borrowed time.
Wentz was his best shot given his age. 2 declining veteran QBs who were in the twilight of their careers to bookend Wentz.

Unless Ballard has a solution to the QB, not sure how safe he is. Jimmy G is a free agent. Carr a $5.6 mil dead cap, Tannehill a $19 mill dead cap could be on the market if their teams cut them loose. But the colts are due a $18 mill dead cap charge on Ryan next season as well when they let ways.

Dating myself, I still think of him first and foremost as the backup QB on those Bills teams that went to 4 straight Super Bowls.

Maybe that's not a good sign.

Ballard should get canned too.

Net result of rhe wentz transaction is that Indy gave up a first in 2022 draft. They got a 2021 3rd and gave up another 3rd for Ryan but got back a 3rd from Washington in their Wentz trade. Due at least a 3rd this draft and given the play of Heinicke I don’t expect wentz to reach the 70% of snaps taken to push it to a second round pick.

Interesting hire. He'll definitely have the locker room's back, but he's going to almost assuredly be entirely dependent on his coordinators for playcalling and roster management.

That hiring is BONKERS. It’s not at all like the NHL where a former player without experience can jump in and work with the team. The intricacies of the different units and sheer number of coaches under your watch takes YEARS of experience to just be bad at juggling.

Completely insane.

I would LOVE to see it work.

someone had to be the scapegoat for their horrid QB situation i guess

but lol @ the saturday hire. that's pretty much saying "we're going to tank the rest of the way so let's hire someone who the fans will like to distract them"

Gus Bradley is the DC and he has HC experience. Shocked that the Colts just didn’t tap him to handle things for the rest of the season.

Guess Saturday gets to finally call the plays from his infamous verbal exchange with Peyton. Lol..
