Analytics tell coaches to pull the goalie earlier than was the case in the past. Analytics more recently say that players in their own end should risk icing and try for a goal when the goalie is pulled. What used to be regarded as stupid and selfish is now being encouraged.

Obviously if you can gain center ice and not risk icing to score an empty netter, then that's ideal. Better players are able to do that due to to skill and speed advantages.

It's interesting that a couple Avs are scoring so many empty netters. What it tells me is that opposing coaches need to reconsider when they pull the goalie when playing the Avs, regardless of what general analytics say.

Empty net goals do matter. Why else would the analytics say to pull the goalie earlier? It's because there's a decent chance of tying a game down a goal with an extra skater. Missing empty net goals keeps increasing the odds of the game being tied up.

Note: I'm not interested in the pissing contest between fan bases, just the topic at hand.

All I know is last year this forum was full of Avs fans calling Kucherov an empty net merchant, saying he didn’t deserve the Art Ross, saying he was cherry picking for empty nets etc.

And now that their boys are about to shatter the record halfway through the season, strangely none of them seem to care about it anymore.

The goal posts are always going to be moved when it comes to Kucherov because of the position he plays, his nationality, and his reputation/personality. If it’s not EN points it will be something else. No point trying to change the Hart narrative online, just have to cheer for him to rack up some more Art Rosses.

Just a result of the analytics geniuses saying you should be pulling the goalie with 8 minutes left. Patrick Roy was such an innovator, just look at all the success he's had in the league as a head coach.

Double empty netters are also a pretty commonly occurring thing. The empty net rules definitely need tweaking now that Patrick Roy, the obvious game changer that he is as a head coach, has made it commonplace to pull the goalie multiple times.

My solution: you can only pull the goalie once. If you allow an EN goal, you're done. Enough with the circus act at the end of every game.

and Colorado isn't even that good, even with their current winning streak they're on pace for 99 points and a +15 goal differential over a full season right now, that's like first round road Playoff team level

never would have guessed they had so many empty net goals already this year
Avatar bet on them breaking 100?

Since they upgraded the goaltending with the Wood trades they have gone 10-3 and that pace would translate to 114 points.

The goal differentitial before was -13 and has been +19 since.

I want to say Patrick Roy as a coach for the Avs was the one that started this "trend" and even now in NY he is doing new ideas with goalie pulls (like the other night). So the Avs benefiting was all the long game, good job Patty!

Lmao great job changing your ideology when it benefits your players literally less than a year later. Seems like you probably only hated it in the first place because it was kucherov and not your guys.
I was looking for reasons why MacKinnon dominated the Hart trophy voting so much even though he had less points. EN points was the obvious one to look at, but obviously voters saw MacKinnon as being vastly superior in more ways than EN points.

And an IOUMVP from choosing Taylor Hall over him a couple years ago.

Every sportsbook I see has MacKinnon at 3rd or 4th best odds for the Hart despite being the current points leader. Where’s the double standard?

Wasn't even remotely close...

I love that McDavid is still higher than Draisaitl. A big LOL at every Oiler fan here telling us Draisaitl is having a better year than the Dawg.

A lot of people don’t like it, I guess bc it skews certain stats? Seems like a dumb argument to me. If it works once in a hundred times, it’s worth it.

I also have to think each game rep in an empty net situation gives your guys that much more experience/chemistry 6v5 could potentially benefit you further down the line
HWen McDrai were racking up PP points everyone was criticizing them for easy point. MacKinnon getting EN goals gets handclaps and "its part of the game"

I shudder to think about i'd read on here if McDavid or Draisaitl had 11 EN goals/points. I really do.

Well, you need to be good to be winning for the other team to pull their goalie.

You need to be trust worthy to be out there at the end.

You need to be skilled and/or a hard worker to get the empty nets at times.

All it does is help Rantanen get a lot if he chooses to leave.

Well, he'll still get a lot, but he'll get more if he goes to free agency.
But you can’t be too good, needs to be a close enough score to get the other team to pull the goalie

Im jealous you were a fan during the Gretzky years, but obv a big zero for the McDavid years.
im not. Its okay. Im just pointing out bringing up rings is a stupid argument or point to make.

You, like me, had zero to do with the team winning. So it holding it over fans is just juvenile.
