I couldn't find any player discussion threads for Caufield as they're either now closed or not relevant.

Anyways, all that to say that I caught both Florida games this weekend and have to say that I'm impressed how much Caufield has rounded out his game. He uses his speed to create opportunities for himself and his teammates constantly. We used to think of his as more of a one trick pony with his shot but he does so much more. He's even more aggressive on the forecheck.

Honestly, I really like where his game is at the moment whether he's scoring or not.

Caufield is going to be a streaky scorer but he will never look like he's in a slump playing this style of game.
Good for his head space and for our team.

Thank you for this thread!

Thought I was taking crazy pills. I think he’s been really really good.

I was worried we wouldn’t get the Caufield from the Cup run back who was getting multiple breakaways and odd man rushes a game. But Lo and behold.

It seems like all the question marks people had of him are being answered. I remember people talking about how awful his hands were and he’ll never be good on the D side of things and we just had to live with it. Etc. etc.

He’s backchecking, stealing pucks, battling along the boards, skating miles, looks fast, getting tons of chances and producing. Even with the goal slump and not being the primary shot option on the PP for the last 12 games or so, he’s still at a .5 gpg rate.
Not too far off a ppg.

And yet this thread has only 4 replies lol.
This board is so bizarre. He’s terrific. We were almost Demidov excited to get him and he’s as good if not better than we could’ve hoped for and barely anyone cares lol

I truly think he has 40 G 40 A upside.

And like you said, I get some people were disappointed last season and even considered trading him but he's been better than ever this season.

Probably as close to prime Gionta we can get. I love how he rounded up his game.

Considering the injury he had to go thru which affected his shooting for a while, it's good to know he's a lot more than just a shooter and can be useful during the play, not a liability until the shot.

I was just thinking this. That first year we had Gionta, he was really something. Such a water bug player. Paced for 35 or so. Would get like 9 sog a game. Great to watch. He was pretty good the year after but not like that first year.

Never thought Caufield would get his skating to that Gionta’s level but the quickness/shiftiness is there and damn close to the top speed if not quite. That’s huge.

The great thing is Caufield’s offensive skill set is much better. The fact that the strength and skating are looking damn close to Gionta’s levels is damn exciting.

Might be wrong, but much better ceiling than Gionta IMO, and atm arguably better.
Outside Gio’s insane career year, I’d think so. Hell I think CC could even eclipse that at his best. But year to year, I’m sure CC could have better production.

Gionta had his career year in his 4th season but he was older than Caufield was in his 4th season. So far CC’s shown more at the same age I believe.

I think he has a monster 2nd half

I don't like the Gionta comparison because he was a speedster breakaway machine in his prime. several posters in this thread have pointed out correctly that Cole seems quicker this season but he's not at that level. probably will never be, but that's OK, because i agree his all-around game is just better.

what an awesome player, he might be my favorite Hab. thanks for this thread :handclap:

I know we all want 40-50 goals

But I'm thrilled with his play either way
He looks dangerous everytime he's out there, trying to make things happen

Also go watch his goal vs FLA carefully and where he was on the ice and just how FAST he got to the net for the goal
It was really somethin
If he’s a 40 goal guy who can put up points the way he is then he’s a Mike Cammaleri caliber player. Very good but not great.

I was hoping he could reach 40-50 consistently per year.l or better. Still might be able to do that but it’s a tall ask and he might not be good enough to get there. We’ll see.

If he’s ‘just’ a Cammaleri level player though, that’s not so bad. Cammy was really good.

He’s consistently paced for 44-50 goals throughout most of his healthy career. Right now he’s pacing for around 40.

What I don’t like about this season is that his shot volume is way down. Need to shoot a lot more.

That's a pretty high bar, isn't it? These are the players that scored 40G in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. All of them playing for playoff teams, looks like.

David Pastrnak
Mikko Rantanen
Leon Draisaitl
Brayden Point
William Nylander
Nathan MacKinnon
Kirill Kaprizov
Auston Matthews

Cammalleri was not a 40-goal guy.

It's conceivable that the Habs now have two top-ten shooters: Laine and Caulfield.
