Not too mention scoring goals always gets more money.

I think our opening offer should be Suzuki's deal and trying to sell Cole on it allowing us to build around them. It probably helps if we make a splash in the summer and get a big name player. But if he's not interested so be it, you show him the money and ensure he's signed long term.
Hopefully we can get him under 9 (fingers crossed) but I would be extremely surprised if he took the Suzuki deal, I would actually bet money against that.

The only big name player on offense I can see coming here is PLD. On defense maybe another big name. But our top 6 already has 4 guaranteed players in Caufield, Dach, Suzuki and Slafkovsky, Dubois would be #5 and the last spot could be Roy or a player not yet drafted.

The future is starting to look good.

Let Caufield play with any other center than Suzuki for a while so his numbers plummet until we sign him to a reasonable contract ;)

Habs 2023 1st is the last disponible spot on the top 6.

How should he make less? He's a better player and a notch above Suzuki, the eye test doesn't lie.

We're all hoping he takes a small discount but let's see what happens, don't hold your breath. If he wants 10 million we have no choice but to pay.
Suzuki is the better player between the two imo

Caufield scored 5 in 7 while Suzuki was doing squat and added two in one game when Suzuki decided to participate.

Caufield will score without Suzuki and I'm pretty sure you could attract PLD more easily if you told him he would be playing with Suzuki. I still think Suzuki is under-rated, though. I think he's hurt because he's never skating hard lately.

8 millions max. People threat him like a ppg+ already , which he’s ain’t yet. And I like Caufield a lot obviously

I thought that too when Lafleur's guy created the poll. I voted Suzuki. But after watching Caufield play more, he's so incredible with the puck, he has it on a string. He's playing at a very high level, almost always makes the right decisions and dekes with the puck, he just doesn't have enough good players around him to score on his passes. I'm convinced that he would be pacing for 90-100 points playing on a strong team with a decent power play. Don't get me wrong I love Suzuki, but I'm not a fan of the inconsistent stretches in his production. Suzuki is a high IQ high skill player no question, he's only gonna get better.

I also see a possibility of Dach eventually taking over the #1C spot. At 6'4" what he's been showing recently is impressive. His speed and puck control coming in from the neutral zone is a thing of beauty. He's got the size and skill to be a Lecavalier or a Getzlaf or a Kopitar level player.

Dubois - Dach - Caufield
Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Roy / '23 1st

This could become a Stanley Cup contending top 6.

$7M would be low but not that low. Anybody talking $9M+ are out of their minds. Why would Caufield get more than J Hughes in both AAV and term? Goals are a premium yes but so is a center like Hughes and even Suzuki.

Comparing Caufield to others who get contracts where more UFA years are purchases is flawed. Caufield's 8 year deal is 5 RFA years. That matters.

Being out for rest of the season with an injury...will have some effect on any new deal.

Now what? We are about to buy a Lambo with maybe some potential “vice caché”.

That shoulder injury may seriously impact him. Do we give him that big contract anyway?

He was playing with the injury, so it couldn't be that impactful.

I could see this throwing a wrench in the works. I'm guessing both sides will now agree to a shorter term prove it style deal.

I know some people thought that was the better choice to begin with. I do not, or didn't before this injury.

Now you gotta make a contract based off a 26 goal season, you can round it up to 30 goals.

short term, 2-3 years 5-6 mils a year and we see after how the shoulder holds. He's a RFA, there's absolutely no reason to rush it, we have 2 high picks in this drafrt, we need the longterm money.

Imagine we land a Bedard and a Carlsson and who knows, maybe Hughe pulls another lapin d'son chapeau and gets us a third top 1st round pick.

Cole is cool but he's not le p'tit jesus. i don't have any need to speculate on how many goals he could potentially score for us, i need to see it first. If another team wants to offer sheet him, the 4 first picks are well worth it for us and for our rebuild.
