It’s a good offer, but after 6 years of waiting, the Devils are probably just ready to see what Gritsyuk can do.

I do think that Colton ends up a Devil but I don't think they send Gritsyuk before he has even played a game for him. I think it'll be much easier like one of their 2nd round picks for him.

Personally I'd love to figure a way to send Palat or Haula for Colton but I can't see why Colorado would take either guy.

I think Grits is the wing that the Devils have been thirsting for, for a while. Then again, I also thought Meier would be a good fit when he was acquired.

I've read some criticism that Colton is not really a center? Gritsyuk may offer a bit more on offense and NJ needs top six wings and bottom six centers so not sure if that is a good fit as Nj moves the potential top six wing for the bottom six wing.

The devils desperately need depth, so they shouldn't be looking to move out Grits, especially at his price point.

Projecting for a long term extension on Luke Hughes, the devils really have no money to spend this year.

They have about 50.6 million invested in forwards with 11 under contract (including Grits). One of those is Kurtis Macdermid which shouldn't even count.

They have about 27 tied up in defensemen which does not include Luke Hughes.

They have 5 tied up in goalies between Markstrom and Daws.

That's 82+ million on a 95 cap. Assuming Luke gets between 8-9 million aav on a long term deal, that puts the team at 90-91 million with 11 forward (really 10), 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies. They'd have one meaningful RFA left in Cody Glass who would eat probably 40-50% of that if they want to bring him back.

Colton would be a cool add, but they likely need to move higher paid people out t first to make it work. Then they should make that move for futures, not cheap guys they project to play minutes this year.

My thought was maybe they used Mercer's cap to use on Colton and to recoup assets. Grits for Colton and maybe Mercer + a Palat or something for 2 cheaper and effective players that are a little older.

I sincerely doubt Tampa wants Palat at the end of the deal they didn't want to sign him to for the very reason NJ is looking to dump him

I think the problem with sending him to Tampa or even Colorado for that matter is they lack the cap space to just take him outright.

I could see Colorado taking Haula and a 2nd for Colton though.

like every devils fan has said, Colton is a good piece but can’t be sending grits away just as he’s about to join the team. That year of ELC for a fully developed prospect is way more valuable than Colton.

NJD needs that cap space as well. 950k gritysuk is absolutely 100% necessary to helping NJD get a quality team under the cap

Mercer-Grits-Palat vs Colton+2 slots to fill with 7 mill combined feels unideal. I don't think 7 mill gets you better than Palat-Mercer, and you probably have to sink some term into an older guy as well (eg bringing in another contract that may not age that well). I'd rather just take my medicine for the next 2 years with Palat, who's still a fine hockey player even tho he's overpaid.
