Avs <-- Monahan (50% ret.) Drouin/Dadonov (50% ret.) Edmundson (50% ret.)

Habs <-- Newhook, Girard

Colorado get a couple of veteran middle 6 forwards on expiring contracts, and a veteran LD in Edmundson who comes with just a 1.75 million cap hit through next season. They also get out from Girard's long term contract

Montreal add a talented young forward in Newhook to their long term core, plus a 24 year old LD from Quebec in Girard who's just entering his prime

I would rather try to get Horvat with that kind of package but an undersized dman is probably the last thing Nucks want.

Never Colorado will do this
In playoff last year Girard played very well before he gets hurt.
Edmundson doesn't fit in the type of play of Colorado
Monahan rental players doesn't worth Newhook because Newhook had a stanley cup experience (win) and not Monahan

Habs don't need Girard and will get future out of Monahan and Edmundson

The habs will be playing the waiting game with Drouin/Dadonov (UFA)

This trade proposal isn't logical for neither team.

Correct me if wrong but the Habs cannot retain on 3 more contracts anyways? Did they not retain on one last summer, cannot remember.

Ahh here come the Habs fans saying they wouldn’t do this. It’s like they feel a need to balance out the other 98% of fans who realize what a terrible offer this is by swinging hard in the opposite direction so they can claim “bad for both sides”.

Hysterical.
Agreed. HuGo takes this and runs. Since only one of the retention spots is for multiple years it is a good deal for the Canadiens. If 2 or 3 of the retention spots were for multiple years HuGo might pass.

You forgot to add Florida and Montreal’s 2023 1st round picks going from the Habs to the Avs.

Otherwise, this is comically awful for Colorado. Hard pass.

What the Habs should do is test the market for those pieces individually with 50% retention and look for futures in return.

What the Avs should do? Keep Girard and Newhook because they are both good and important players.

Or maybe it's just the case

We have tons of LHD, either in the NHL or in the system.

Edmundson and Monahan are actually trade material to get some future assets, picks and prospects

Those kind of assets are more in line with what the organization is searching for

Anyway, you can make all the judgement of intentions you want, I don't see this offer as really interesting for the Habs...

P.S.: if it was a one sided offer, Habs fan would be all over it ..

I'm not seeing the point of including Drouin or Dadonov in this proposal. They're useless in MTL and Colorado might as well play.... anyone. I mean, if they want filler we can send them Pitlick instead. Otherwise I guess it's just a couple of rentals at 50% (one with an added season), which isn't all that bad, though asking for 2 roster players kind of kills off the "building up for the playoffs" idea of rental deals...

Yeah, I do think Edmundson and Monahan have TDL value on their own merits - likely with appeal to different teams, better to break them into separate moves most likely.

Look I get that the Habs want to invest in picks, but you'd be absolutely nuts not to do this deal for Newhook alone. Granted this is HF and if you aren't an All-Star by age 21 - people would rather have a pick that has a 25% chance of being anything. But if Newhook were on the Habs right now he'd absolutely be looked at as a building block piece.

There is zero chance the Avs would entertain dealing him for 3 UFAs (two of whom are completely and utterly worthless) and 1.5 years of Edmundson (who they don't really need as they made their commitment to Josh Manson). Let alone just toss in Girard as a "makeweight". Neither should be considered untouchable from the Avs who should be gunning for another Cup but this deal...this deal ain't it.

Avs can probably just dump Girard's long term contract this summer if they attach a mid pick and/or prospect.

Keep him for depth this season and try to rebuild his tanked value with another 1/2 a playoff run.

Newhook would be a great pickup, but sadly the Av's turn this down.

I swear Montreal trade proposals are always the worst. Two years ago it was 1st + newhook for Price. Now this trash. I suggest you actually watch other teams and said players.

Why would Colorado need to get out of Girards contract in the first paragraph then he’s a 24 year old LD just entering his prime in the second paragraph? Yes, Girard is likely leaving but this ain’t it.

I would do Monahan 50% + 3rd rd pick 2023/Jake Evans for Newhook

God awful for the Avs but at least the OP didn't include something along the lines of "Drouin would look great next to his junior line mate MacK" so that's a step in the right direction.
