Pleasantly surprised by him and JJ this year. Same old shit with JTC and (formerly) Jost as the whipping boys though.

Well as a Kings fan, you don’t pay MacDermid for his hockey skills. Delivering the inevitable one swing at a time.

Yea, he's not a great hockey player, but he's a great teammate and just fills in wherever he is asked to. Love having him on the team.

kinda kidding aside though, he’s a better bottom 6 D than Colorado has had in….when was 2001? He can’t skate sure, but he actually can line up a hit now and then real well and isn’t taking penalties. The “deterrent” factor is a grey area, Avs fans certainly aren’t happy about the fights Landeskog, Mackinnon, and Kadri are still having to for themselves. But now and again it lines up perfectly, like when Greenway chickenwinged Kuemper and McDermid being the closest Av to him, Jordan tried to run at first before 8 straight smacks to the face.

There are probably 100 guys in the AHL who could “produce” more, but there still is an intangible value to having (one of) the baddest blokes on the block at the end of the bench.

Landy, MacKinnon and Kadri are all hotheads though. They could be playing with 4 goons and if someone ticked them off they'd start throwing anyways.

I guess the value is in part that they can be hotheads, but then also not have to fight Lucic, Reeves, Wilson, Greenway, Kassian . . . Like if they weren't hotheads, there would never be any expectation that they would have to fight? But now they can turn down those fights while not feeling emasculated because those guys would have to fight McDermid instead.

It's really the kind of thing which seems ridiculous and pointless until suddenly it's the only thing that matters. Like in that one humiliating game against the Blues in 2013-2014 where all these fights broke out and we were just getting our teeth kicked in.

It obviously doesn't just stop your players from getting hit though. It's not like Zadorov isn't going to line up MacKinnon just because McDermid is playing 6 minutes a night.
