Would the Hurricanes trade Mikko Rantanen if they can’t sign him by the trade deadline?

Good written piece by Lebrun who imo is the most plugged in canes insider out of all them. Basically says it probably makes more sense for Carolina to keep Rantanen even as a rental and try to resign him past the trade deadline. Doesn’t think contending teams will be able to offer a necas type package which makes sense. Says canes haven’t been reaching out to teams to talk about Rantanen it’s been a few teams calling them.

If there's no way in hell he's signing i could see it as a longshot possibility IF we find something of value we can get out of it. I doubt we do it for a couple picks and B prospects, but maybe if we see a guy who could be some immediate help with growth potential

The thing that can help everything is winning in the playoffs and him having success

What would help right now is winning Tuesday. They have been in a funk for a long time and are still humming around. 500 which is good news. Also the next 7-10 games are in all respects mostly easy and they should be favored. Winning 7 of those 10 will make a lot of people shut up

I still think if there’s truly no chance that Mikko ends up wanting to extend here you should try to do everything you can to try and acquire Pettersson.

He’s clearly still struggling and with his quote about the media last night, I don’t think he’s having too great time of a time despite claiming to want the pressure that would come after Miller was traded.

You could make a pitch to JR and Allvin about taking a bad contract/situation off their hands before it’s too late. They’ll get to replace it with a player who has been more consistent production wise over this course his career and is also a proven winner. And at the very least they get the first shot and a leg up on everyone else on trying to extend him.

If one thing is for certain with the Canucks it’s that they desperately don’t want to lose Hughes. I’m sure having the Pettersson situation resolved and Mikko Rantanen locked up long term would certainly go a long way when trying to convince him to stay.

It’s a long shot and I’m not gonna crap all over the organization for making a big move, but I do agree with others here that it’s a tough pill to swallow if Mikko ends up walking and we could have traded for Pettersson instead (issues and all).

Personally, I would be pained knowing we chose not to pursue Elias Pettersson, who would come in with 7 years remaining on his deal so we could pursue Rantanen, so if he walks, it adds a lot of salt to that wound. Do I think Rantanen is better than EP? Sure. Would I have rather traded Necas for an extended EP if Rants walks? Absolutely.
See...this is easier for me because I think the last year and change is what we'd be getting with Pettersson. I didn't want him at any cost...I have serious questions about his "give a damn" level and whether he has the fortitude to be here. He got paid and *kaput.*

I don't view his term as a positive. I don't want to pay EP what he's getting paid to get outperformed by Aho for the next 7 years.

This. He had one year of very high production. Got paid like it was his norm and Aho out performed him every other year. Petterson is not a game changer. Mikko is if he can figure out the system and not start pressing.

It really is a fair point to wonder if paying Rantanen would even be a good move. I don't really subscribe to the notion that he was carried by MacKinnon, but whatever the reasons, his production here has been incredibly disappointing. It's only been 7 games so I don't read too much into that but how the rest of this season plays out is critical in my view. The more I think about it the more I don't like this trade -- we never should've given Necas away for a pending UFA. Now we're stuck trying to get him extended ASAP when it may be wiser to wait to see how he does here with a larger sample size, but that brings the risk of him being closer to FA and less likely not to consider his other options then. Honestly though, even if he does go on a heater and puts up like 1.2+ ppg from here on out, that wouldn't fully ease my mind about giving him $13m or whatever it'll be. Was exciting to land a big fish, after missing out a few times but it's frustrating how it's playing out now. Hopefully he gets settled, re-signs and shows the same level of play here that he did in Colorado, but that's not looking incredibly likely based on what we've seen so far, unfortunately.
So you're saying we got ourselves a rookie GM?

Why are the Canucks trading Pettersson? Wasn't the entire problem Pettersson vs Miller, and they solved that by shipping Miller out?

They may not be, but playing armchair GM, he is signed to a bigger contract than he is showing he is worth and this is the last year they can move him before his NTC kicks in and gives him control of the process.
