I think it boils down to fit. Beating 98 mil is the easy part, the harder part is convincing Rants that this is the spot he wants to stay for 8 years.
Agreed. I was thinking $14M x 7 is about the best offer he'd get on the free market right now. Maybe $15M if a team has oodles of capspace, but that's unlikely, especially with Drai getting $14M. Rantanen is not better than Draisaitl.

$14x7 is something we could match easily on a 7 year deal, or just offer $14x8, or get a discount. $12.5Mx8 seems like the reasonable middle ground for everyone, but maybe Rantanen will argue he wants a higher AAV to get closer to 14. Fortunately we're well structured to handle that. I imagine Tulsky will want to watch how Rantanen looks in the system for the whole rest of the season and playoffs before negotiating an extension.

Due to this trade and all the tweets I consumed about it, my twitter algorithm has decided I should be introduced to Canes twitter. One of the worst grievances ever done towards me, this group is so much worse than any Facebook Canes group I was privy to in the past. These twitter Canes fans are so arrogant and loudly stupid I have to bite my tongue constantly. Imagine a group of professors teaching classic literature when they would be struggling to complete Captain Underpants books.

By the way, how does the first Captain Underpants book end? Asking for a friend.

Captain underpants gets kids who would otherwise never pick up a book interested in reading so he’s all good by me
Recently been reading a ton for the first time in maybe a decade because of how damning the statistics are regarding how much of a societal drop off we’ve had when it comes to reading. After a few months you feel bad and ashamed about how much your conflictive ability has improved and how you are for real doing yourself a disservice by not reading ardently.

A Captain Underpants tangent taking off in a Mikko Rantanen trade thread? How HF26 is that?!

Some Canes Twitter thinks Rants doesn’t re-sign because he’s not getting 20+ mins and is playing with Blake. We’re 5 games in w/ him and the argument is “fit’

He could easily have 3-4goals already, he’s clearly snakebit. Also he’s had a few assists called back on disallowed goals. Blake fits on that line just fine, although I do think Jarvis is the better long term fit there.

The Canes Twitterati are insufferable. I shudder to think their meltdown if Rantanen doesn’t stick around.

On another note, a bunch of Rantanen related stuff in Friedman’s 32 Thoughts:

Nothing new that’s hasn’t already been discussed ad nauseum here, but one thing he keeps bringing up is the potential of a deal not being done by the deadline and would the Canes consider flipping him if a deal isn’t done by then. I wonder if that is pure speculation or the sometimes “informed” speculation he sometimes does. No doubt they’d get a crap-ton of futures for rental Rantanen, especially if they retained another 50%. A bidding war for the ages would occur for Rantanen under $3M aav. Likely moot though as I still have positive thoughts about him re-signing.

The Puckpedia article with the former Canes VP of Hockey Ops mentions it, too. He left the job last month after 4 years. https://puckpedia.com/news/Rantanen-trade-Schwartz

In it he outlines the whole strategy. Sounds like Necas had no hope of being signed here long term by the team. Discusses how they were trying to avoid an offer sheet, etc. with the last contract.

In Carolina, we designed Necas’ deal to combat an impending and always uncertain arbitration hearing, even though the deal would “walk” Necas to UFA. With a two-year structure, we accomplished two things: (1) we avoided being leveraged with an offer sheet in the summer of 2025 that could have prevented Necas from being traded in the last year before reaching UFA (a player cannot be traded for one-year after a matched offer sheet); and (2) we hedged this season’s performance by locking him in for two years. To better explain: had an offer sheet been signed this coming summer (after a 1-year deal last summer), Carolina would have been forced to make a decision: (a) exercise the right of first refusal and walk the player to UFA with no return, or (b) accept the terms of an offer sheet. Carolina had been the target of an offer sheet before, so it wasn’t too far-fetched to imagine a world where we were faced with an offer sheet scenario.

We did have some cooperation from the agent because he rightfully understood that the deal needed to be “team-friendly” to be tradeable. In my opinion, it didn’t make much sense to sign him to a long-term deal—if the goal was to trade him—unless it was on terms that we (or another team) couldn’t refuse. I thought it would be more efficient to give an acquiring team a clean slate in negotiating a long-term deal with their own preferred structure and term. In the end, the short-term deal gave much-needed flexibility to an acquiring team and the opportunity to assess before a long-term negotiation.

. . .

I'm trying to imagine why the Canes might flip Rants and each possibility seems very unlikely. #ownrental

  • Canes look like they're out of playoff contention
  • Rants doesn't mesh at all with the team, looks to be a poor fit going forward
  • there's a different very high impact player available they could add at the deadline that fits the team better and makes up for flipping Rants (how Borg would that be lol?)
  • Rants sleeps with Dundon's wife :sarcasm:

I can't see us flipping Rantanen at the deadline, but I do think we need to keep the possibility that he doesn't re-sign in our mindset. Maybe put feelers out to Toronto and see where their mindset is regarding Marner.

If the Canes believe Rantanen won't re-sign and Toronto believes Marner won't re-sign, maybe that's a flip we can work towards at the deadline

I think Rants would be way more effective if we ever actually had anyone screen the goalie, or crash the net for a rebound. He's had a lot of great shots but we just have so little follow-up on most

Some take this poster's info as gospel.

All this account does is re-post information that’s already available and claims his “mentor” from his “internship” with the Canes is feeding him info.

He’s just throwing stuff out there to see if it sticks so he then can point back to it and be like “me insider too!” Worthless.
