Canes get Rantanen w/o a 1st round pick or prospect included. Few months and Avs will be back at square 1 trying to sign a high-quality player, that won't be cheap(if they keep him). Canes already won the trade deadline. If Canes re-sign Mikko, then they smoked this trade. Hall might get a little jump in his game going to a good team. He was 20 goal guy in BOS. Bedard gets a 3rd rounder.

aight I guess for once getting up before 6am on a Saturday morning was worth it, if only to secure a spot on thread #1

Don't really have much else to add other than... wow. Glad to see Rantanen out of the division and out of Avs. Looking forward to seeing him with Canes, should be fun to follow!

You know the Canes gave up Necas right? The 11th highest scoring player in the league?

How could they possibly bring in Miller now?
Kotkaniemi + Roslovic (for cap) ++ (I suggest Morrow + 1st/Artamonov+2nd, it'll be low :D )

But, if Miller is willing to waive for COL, I could see:

To COL: Miller
To VAN: Mittlestadt, Drury, + a couple picks (no 1sts, COL doesn't have any)

Then VAN deals Drury/Hoglander for a Dman, or tries upgrading on Mittlestadt at C, while COL looks like this at F:

Drouin-MacKinnon-Necas
Lekhonen-Miller-Nichushkin (eventually)
Wood-Colton-O'Connor
Kelly-Parssinen-Kiviranta

Carolina is in a great position to re-sign Rantanen.

Everybody is locked in for multiple years and they have cap flexibility. So even if they have to overpay to keep Rantanen, it is unlikely to disrupt their salary structure because their earliest big contract coming up isn't for another 4 seasons with Sverchnikov. Even if Rantanen wants something like 15 million, in 4 years cap inflation will make it so that is much less disruptive to their salary structure.

Colorado has Makar coming up in 2027. So if Rantanen comes in at 15M+, Makar is getting more.

Careful there, Mr. Dubas

Remember what happened last time!

Drury instead of KK doesn’t really move me one way or the other. Worse player but retain way more cap flexibility. I do think Drury is a great role player who plays a style that is going to be well received in Denver and is certainly an upgrade over some of the stuff in our bottom six.

Still in shock. It’s not even about the return at the moment or about disliking Necas, which I don’t. He’s tremendously skilled.

Just…hard to wrap my head around Mikko being gone.

Mikko was an amazing player maker, elite passer and had crazy vision. However, the last year and half, something changed. Lots of his traits just disappeared (especially the elite passing) and he seemed just out of it for many games. His elite skill masked some of this, but many Avs fans have been noticing it for a long time. Still has one of the best shots in the league though.
And his overall work ethic all but disappeared. It was weird. Many of us thought it was maybe an injury but it never got better. Ive been saying for awhile now.. there’s NO WAY im paying this version of Mikko 14mil. Absolutely not.

The Avs had to do this and I like the deal. Loosing him for nothing cripples the franchise. This frees up space to add more and gets much needed faceoff guy. Time will tell

The problem is the depth takes a hit, which has been a big thing last couple years if MacK/Rants/Makar were not producing at crazy rates to stay above water. Getting Necas and saving 3M ish in cap hit this year and having him for next year should help towards getting money elsewhere in the line up (one would hope)

Bet we'll still have to watch Parker Kelly skate aroudn doing nothing.

They’re good but they’re not MacKinnon good.

Aho isnt MacK but he’s a top 10 center in this league and he should mesh insanely well with his fellow 2016 WJC gold medalist compatriot.

I suspect a recharged Mikko to see little drop off in production and I suspect we will see Aho’s jump up into superstar territory.
