Player Discussion Cody Ceci Part II

He's locked it down in his zone. But can we all agree he has a penchant for putting passes in teammates skates?

I'm def pro-Ceci. The kid is 23 years old, playing the hardest minutes on a playoff team that is 1 win away from the 2nd round. He's taken huge strides in his development this year. Come back to this thread in 2 years, you'll all look ridiculous.

This is fair enough.

yeah, and i think it's fair to say that he has to become better with the puck. I have said it all year.

He is becoming very good at positionning, handling the rush, he is more physical on the board, but need to do it more.

But he struggle with the puck, and that's why i said that he struggle with the cycle. He will get to the puck but his passes are soft and not accurate.

He looked good today again i thought. Let hope that's the Ceci we get from now on. I consistent Ceci, rather than an up and down Ceci. 3 games in a row. For me

Ceci has all the tools but no toolbox imo.

Decent player, put in a difficult role.

And yet he saved two more goals against in today's game. What is he up to now in these playoffs 7 saves to prevent goals against? He seems to be doing something right but if he isn't scoring offensively it's perceived he isn't doing enough. :shakehead

I guess everyone seems to miss the point that THIS coach uses Ceci second only to Karlsson, does that not account for something? Does this coach know what he is doing or not? He's got him playing a shutdown role, who else in this organization can play that role for over 25 minutes a game?

Let's look at this a different way.

What did Bret Burns look like at 23?
What about Marc Methot at 23?
Or Giordano, Keith, Hamilton?

Defense is a very difficult position to play, and most NHLers don't come into their own until after age 25...some become a revelation at age 29 or 30. To have a kid shutting down top lines and holding his own at 23 is pretty damned good.

Not saying Ceci will be a star or anything, but he definitely isn't trending as a 3rd pairing guy.

I keep forgetting he is only 23 yrs old playing a very difficult position. :handclap:

He was naturally an offensive minded dman, he didn't just lose those skills, and it's way easier to get that part of his game back. He's gonna be a beast for this team if we don't trade him. Really starting to mature and be a very solid defensive dman.

Battles through confidence issues this whole year which will pay dividends in his development next year

I think he was in junior ,but i never got the sense it would translate as well in the NHL .Boucher gave him a role that allows him to use his jack of all trades, master of none skillset .I have him as a solid 3 man for many years to come .

His decisions in general in the offensive zone are my only complaint at this point. He quite often just waits too long to decide what to do and loses his shooting or passing lane.

Thought he had a decent series. He definitely hustled out there.

Still do not like his decision making in the offensive zone. He's going to snap his neck one day with all the double clutching he does

The Rangers don't have a line like Bergeron, Marchand and Pastarnak/Backes.

Ceci-Phaneuf will look and do much better.

His first three games were my worst nightmare. He was good in the last 3 though. Not how you start it's how you finish I suppose

I was really hoping his shot would squeak through Rask in OT. Even if it would have been a flukey one, a series clincher is just the type of confidence booster he could use.

He does, I think part of it is that he's almost always facing top competition which gives him very little time to make decisions. Harpur often slows it down and takes the time to make a good pass but he's out there against Dom Moore compared to the other team's top lines.

With his size and skating Ceci should be able to make more time for himself, hopefully that will come with experience and confidence.

He's also got a penchant for shooting it right into shinpads. I'd love for him to shoot more, it seems he's often got a shooting lane right when he receives passes in the offensive zone but his hesitation allows defenders to get in the way.

Decent game yesterday but he still lost coverage on the Bruins tying goal (the opposite of locking it down) and his possession stats are woeful.

I'd have to go back and take a look, but I think the tying goal was a mini 2 on 1 created by a bad change, where I think he played the pass while closing in on the shooter in order to rush the shot and prevent Marchand(?) from being able to walk in on goal. Andy let out a terrible rebound on that one, he either had to swallow that puck or put it in a corner. It was also after an icing (which is why the change was bad) so I'm not sure if Ceci was stuck out there from the previous shift or just fresh on rushing to get into position.

Maybe I am mis-remembering though.

I'm sorry

Bergeron's goal was on Anderson imo. Marchand took a shot and Andy let an awful rebound that should have been handled. The puck ended up going off a skate, off the post and Bergeron had a tap in... Not Ceci's fault imo

The bad rebound was the main issue for sure (well aside from the change creating the whole rush), however nobody had Bergeron for the rebound, which is problematic. What I don't 100% recall is whose man was Bergeron in the given situation.
