I’m looking forward to the season starting...
I bet in actual dollars the Sens will be 20 million below the floor

I do not like this at all. And also there is no way in hell that Ceci ends up playing a single game for the Leafs. They’ll just flip him for a pick and then they’ll be able to re-sign Gardiner

no they won’t . Still not enough for Marner

Sens are gonna get an asset like Brown or Bracco in this deal too

Dubas is high on analytics, but is Babcock? I'm guessing Babcock wants a RD if they move Zaitsev. This probably solves that.

From the Leafs perspective, unless they shockingly extend Ceci to a multi-year contract, this is probably more getting out of 4 extra years of Zaitsev rather than it is adding 1 year of Ceci. I'd imagine there's no real market for Zaitsev other than taking advantage of the opportunity that D.J. Smith who seems to like Zaitsev taking over as the head coach of a non-cap team has presented them.
if u notice since Larry tannenbaum met with Shanahan after resigning him for 5 years,Babcock hasnt said much or endorsed either of these 2 new assistants
babcock has been told IMO to play his stars, let management do its job and basically shut up .
the leafs may very well be vastly different come July 2

Would personally simply walk away from Ceci and not double down and trade him for a longterm signed similar player. Appearing to be yet another horrific/proudest moment move coming from the brain trust lol, of course we should expect no less....the Ottawa Dumpsters!

This trade sounds even worse this morning than it did yesterday.

The Dorion presser after this is gonna be a must watch/listen and the upcoming spin job is gonna be an instant classic.

Behind you, look out
I am fine with it. Ceci needs to go.

One of two things happens, either Zaitsev works well in our new system and becomes a Methot for Chabot or Brannstom or he doesnt and we tank harder than ever and we accidentally forget to renew his visa for him and he goes back to Russia.

Chabot/DeMelo
Brannstrom/Zaitsev

vs

Chabot/Demelo
Brannstrom/Ceci

One makes me go, okay. The other causes panic attacks.

Zaitsev and his 5 years alone are worth it when the alternative would be Pierre signing Ceci to a long term deal to hold down the #4 spot instead. He’s the better player. Think of it as separate parts. If Ceci extends for say as high as 4.5-4.8 million (assuming they keep him) that frees up 1-1.3 million of cap space. It doesn’t sound like much, but given there the Toronto’s at right now, it actually is. Kadri is better than Tierney but not to extend of the Leafs not valuing him over the financial flexibility they’d receive with the trade, plus Tierney is more disciplined and Dubas is anti truculence. Maybe they need more space, and so we take on Brown as well as a dump. Not a bad thing.

Tkachuk-Kadri-Batherson

Duclair-White-Ryan

Balcers-Brown/Chlapik/Norris-Brown

Smith-Pageau-Verronneau

Chabot-DeMelo

Wolanin-Zaitsev

Borowiecki-Jaros

The alternative isn’t signing Ceci to a long-term deal. It’s not qualifying Ceci and having that money freed up for use on other things.

Doesn't riding the year out (that's what we are doing anyways isn't it?) and then spending the ~5 million dollars elsewhere make more sense?

Maybe trade for a guy that isn't being pushed out the door, with an extremely unappealing contract?

Zaitsev is better than Ceci, no doubt in my mind. How much, yet to be determined.

I have hope Zaitsev turn to be a surprise like Demelo did. If Dj want him is because he know he can turn better here

Zaitsev's money is low end top 4 money.

When he was signed, the leaf's had Shanahan, Loy and Babcock on board plus axwholelot more. What did they collectively see to give him that deal? did Zaitsev derail because of injuries?

I'm not as soured on Ceci as most here. You'd think having him gone would be cause for celebration. If we get a player back and a prospect, or a draft pick or a second player....that's better than guys talking about a mid round pick or walking away.

If he's better than Ceci in your mind, having him signed for low 4s is a good thing no?
