The fact that they are paying Hamilton 9 million while Hughes is on the team is wild to me.

Hamilton to the blue jackets for Peeke, Laine and Danforth

Why would Columbus do that? Problem with Hamilton is he's paid like a top defensemen when all of his career he's been a liability defensively.

Werenski fills the top defenseman role for the Jackets and they have more depth on defense than the Devils do.

Until the Devils add a Trouba-like defender (there aren't many and the club has hamstrung itself with huge contracts to players like Hamilton, Meier, and Bratt) they will continue to struggle.

Going +40 percent on the power play wasn't likely to last.

In an alternate universe, Fitz manages to get the Tkachuk deal done instead of Meier and the Devils are rolling.

In reality - change the HC before you make any drastic roster decisions.
Given what TKachuk went for…what was the devils ofering…..how does that solve goalies

Agreed. This is year 2 of the window with a very young core. Maybe that’s what the team needs long term, part of the maturing process. Not all progress is linear. There’s still things to work out, but it’s very early in the process. Hopefully they use this as a lesson.
Exactly. Almost every really good young core goes through it. Detroit didn’t suddenly start winning Cups in 97’. They had to learn to win the right way, to learn to win a lot. It’s one thing if you’re loading up for a run, late in your window. Then sure, make some moves. This core is gonna be around for a long time, and they lost two very important veteran dmen, whom they depended on to play important minutes.

They’ll make a couple of minor moves at or towards the deadline. They’ll be fine.

Defensive anarchy.

NCAA-level goaltending.

Utter lack of toughness.

FItz has to do SOMETHING or simply write off the season.

EVEN if -- as is likely now that he has let these glaring problems fester -- he has to pay through the nose without any leverage.

What now?
