Dach on the 1st line is criminal....but only if you're trying to win.
We're not trying to win.

Development is still paramount.

Why grab him?
Because he speaks french?
This guy has like one more season of experience than MSL in the NHL.

Let's not forget.....Montgomery was also fire by Dallas despites a major winning record for ''unprofessional conduct''. Now the Bruins simply quit on him at the 1st chances they got.......

We're still good to go with MSL.....considering we're not trying to win.
Montgomery had a 120-41-23 record for a .715 points percentage with the Bruins. the firing was to send a message and isn't indicative of his coaching abilities

The guy have been coaching since 2005 and he was very successful at many levels, he has way more experience them MSL.

He was fired because he had a drinking problem and he’s totally fine now

Bruins fired Cassidy the 1st chance they had and he went winning the Cup the year after

Yes let's hire the coach (Montgomery) that got fired for not being able to get a team with a better roster to play to expectations, and fire the coach the players on the team (St Louis) love playing for, who has the pulse of it's members and has helped develop them and is an integral part of the organizations mantra.

Makes complete logical sense.

This thread is so stupid, it's a carbon copy of the Gallagher lynch mob thread of last season, just hate filled vitirolic nonsense.
I agree about the Gallagher hate last year.

For this thread though, I don't see why we wouldn't want an Assistant Coach with experience and success. Marty is learning. In almost everything in sports that is high level, you continue to get coached. Why shouldn't he have an assistant coach who can offer some experience and perspective. It's possible Montgomery is terrible and useless but his record suggests not, and he seems more qualified than most Assistant Coaches, e.g. Burrows, what qualified him? He assistant-coached the Rocket for a couple of years when they missed the playoffs... Montgomery might not accept, but trying to get him as Assistant Coach could be a good idea, even when the plan is to keep Marty.

The firing is because that despites his W-L records, he already lost the room and it started when he picked a fight with Marchand.

The guy have been coaching since 2005 and he was very successful at many levels, he has way more experience them MSL.

He was fired because he had a drinking problem and he’s totally fine now

Bruins fired Cassidy the 1st chance they had and he went winning the Cup the year after

Did nothing special in 5 years with University of Denver, not even made the PO once

3 full season in the NHL, got fired twice, once because he had a drinking problem
Had 2 very good teams on their way up in the NHL but did nothing impressive.

This season the Bruins are 8-9-3
The Bruins are 19th in the NHL but 2 points away from being 12th
You think it's reason enough to fired a coach with a record like he had?

Cassidy was fired after 6 seasons, which is often the timespan for a coach before their message gets old. Montgomery was fired after 2 seasons. Not same thing.

There's obviously something fishy with this guy (And we have no clue if he's fine now)

I just don't see why the Habs must go after him like he's something special, he's not and on top of not being anything special, there's seems to be risk involved.

Nobody is really hand picked for the Habs. You have to speak french first and that discounts 99% of any decent coaches.Do you think Hugo would have picked a coach that never coached a game if he had a choice of the best available.Good bilingual coaches do not come along very often. You don't wait till Montgomery leaves for another team then it's back to the recycle bin
Yup - I can tell you for a fact from the youth programs both Hughes & MSL coached - Gorton & Hughes had their guy in mind all the way before interviews, starry eyed when it comes to MSLs out of the box thinking of the game + ability to sell that vision to this upcoming generation of player.

And oh BTW “that guy” also spoke French. Gorton had tried to bring MSL on as Associate coach w NYR, but he didn’t want to leave youth hockey.

Torts was able to pry him away as the PP consultant coach which only required a few times a month.

MSL was as handpicked as handpicked can get..

HuGo’s goal is to bring in USA Hockey skills & training philosophy / mentality into Habs org and MSL is that conduit.

You maybe right but i'm not seeing much improvement from this team .It's time to turn the corner and if the Habs continue to regress someone will pay the price and it won't be Hugo .

They won the NCAA championship in 2017 where he was name Coach of the year in the NCAA and they where the NCHC champion 3x

He had a record 120-41-23 (715%), the best season in NHL history, won the Jack Adams when many were not putting them in the playoffs during the 1st 2 years, that’s not impressive ?

Was well respected by his players when they go in the podcast

And his story is well documented, he’s 100% restored

Then why did he got fired?
Because the team is 2 points aways from being a top 12 team in the NHL?

And please....I'm just not the guy that will believe things said on a podcast or his well documented recovery, I lived with addiction and still do to this day. That fight is never over, relapse happens all the time and you won't ear about it on a podcast.

And no, winning the Jack Adams is not impressive as it rarely, if ever, goes to the best coach.....but usually goes to the coach who had the best team in the bench. Coaching is much much more than just the W-L record.

Now the Habs are looking at developping our kids, I don't see where's the track record on that for Montgomery....

Montgomery picked a fight w Marchand - players have all the power nowadays, and coaches have none. Montgomery lost the room after l’affaire Marchand.

As for being 2-pts away… Neely & Sweeney are not stupid, they know their Bruins team overachieved last year, they are nowhere near as good a team as their record was after Bergeron & Krejci retirements, their offseason acquisitions were not the right fits, and they’ve got nothing in the prospect pool due to years of poor drafting…. they know Jacobs is just waiting to pull the trigger & shitcan them… this is a desperation move by a desperate Pres & GM

McDavid told Edm management to give Nurse $9M he was asking, and Oilers did it, why?

To keep McDavid happy knowing Nurse is his BFF

Montgomery as asst-coach in MTL….:naughty:

The guy will probably wait for the next headcoach firing elsewhere in the league. He won’t sit long a home waiting.
Montgomery’s assistant in Boston who is now the new head coach also has been waiting for a head coach gig after Avs shitcanned him 3+ yrs ago

How long did multiple Cup winner Dan Bylsma wait to get another head coach gig until Sea hired him?

Did nothing special in 5 years with University of Denver, not even made the PO once
Montgomery established the hockey program at Denver, it was a nothing program before he got there…

Dumb thread deserves dumb title.
The thread is not dumb but I'll agree the title should read like a question "Is Coaching a Serious issue?"
Instead of the Bold statement it reads like. There were huge issues to start the season no one can deny it.
If in fact MSL shows progress like we expect our players to do all will be well.
However the jury is nowhere near being out yet IMO.

Montgomery for assistant is a silly idea. You don't undermine your head coach with galaxy brain moves like that.

Either fire MSL and offer Montgomery a head coaching job, or allow Marty to coach the team out of the current troubles.

You can quietly communicate to Montgomery that the job might be open in the summer and he'll be the first choice if we decide to part with MSL by that time.

Not sure what to think about Monty, but in my mind Boston over achieved while he was there.

That’s the way I see it too. If you’re considering hiring someone like Montgomery, you have to make a decision on MSL otherwise you’re basically hiring his replacement and just sticking him right next to him on the bench. I don’t know how that wouldn’t cause tension. I personally think our French Canadian talent pool when it comes to coaches is too small to pass up on someone like Montgomery but I guess we’ll see what happens.

The title thing should certainly be amended, I have no problem with your take, let's face it, the jury is NEVER OUT when it comes to coaching, it doesn't matter who's behind the bench, there will always be questions and critiques.

It's the idea of removing him this season that's stupid. Removing Marty from this team who's players highly respect and respond to, who's built rapport with and has helped develop, all the while following the guiding principle this management team hired him for in the first place, would do far more damage than good at this juncture.

Marty is growing just as his young team is, he deserves the same patience as well, he's highly intelligent, motivated, hard working and has a unique knowledge of the game from a fresh perspective, that the players appreciate.

Lets not forget the team is still going through a rebuild, there's going to be many bumps along the way that isn't entirely the fault of the coach. At times It's akin to blaming a parent because their baby can't walk yet.

Marty has done NOTHING to even suggest he needs removing. It's the actual opposite, he has been of great benefit to this team.
