The two men played together with the Cégep Saint-Laurent Patriotes in 1987-1988. It was Hughes who sold Montgomery, who played for four years in Maine, on the idea of taking the American university route. When he left to play in Vermont, he continued to help his friend in his efforts. Several years later, when Montgomery was commuting between the National League and the American League, he called his old accomplice to ask him if he would like to take charge of his career again.
“What I always admired about Kent is that he works hard and is so intelligent. He is a student of the game and he always thought outside the box. In his career as an agent, I think that is why his clients loved him so much. He helped them develop as a player as well as a person, and that is because of the communication he had with each of them.” He’s an honest guy who values character as much as what you can do on the ice.”
After his playing career ended, Montgomery quickly climbed the coaching ladder. At every step, he continued to rely on his old pal’s advice.
“When I was coaching in Dubuque or the University of Denver, he would call me and tell me to go see this power play or that power play, that he had found something very advanced. And he was right. He would travel to see clients and if there was a coach at a college who was doing something different that he thought would help a team win, he would tell me and I would go see videos. He was always right.”
Whenever a tough question loomed or a difficult decision came his way, Montgomery called upon the wisdom of Kent Hughes. He always wanted his friend to know he could do the same.
“But life is always beautiful when you talk to Kent. That’s why I think he’s tailor-made for what he’s just undertaken. Of course, there will be tough days. Working hard and struggling, that’s life in the NHL. But Kent loves working hard, he lives for these kinds of challenges. I’m not surprised he accepted the Canadiens’ offer because it’s an opportunity for him to add something to his life experience.”

Mongomery should be grabbed immediately and offered assistant coach. He might never becomes head coach again but he could probably "inspire" our present coach to do better.
1 president s trophy and 8 consecutive playoff apperances, even though to go in your direction he inherited the winning core and has not really been able to provide the appropriate depth to win a cup.

Axe will NEVER fall on MSL, he may decide to walk away but the axe will never fall… definitely not w HuGo in charge of hockey ops

He's apparently in the last year of his deal, so there might be less incentive to sit back and collect cheques.

What about meritocraty?
Not in this case unless management and MSL have differing opinions on how to develop the young players.

Just as Axe never fell on Gainey, Scotty, St Patrick, Big Bird and other legends until they decided to walk away…. same with MSL especially w HuGos hand picked coach in place
There is no one else who merits or is good enough to be a 2c currently so he is the only choice.

Yes let's hire the coach (Montgomery) that got fired for not being able to get a team with a better roster to play to expectations, and fire the coach the players on the team (St Louis) love playing for, who has the pulse of it's members and has helped develop them and is an integral part of the organizations mantra.
Makes complete logical sense.

I'm really hoping everyone in management and coaching staff is all in on hiring Montgomery as an assistant coach. They have always had a team first approach with the management structure. This is a win win only question is are there ego's that will get in the way of getting better? I believe if Montgomery is asked to come on board everyone will embrace it.

This guy has like one more season of experience than MSL in the NHL.
Let's not forget.....Montgomery was also fire by Dallas despites a major winning record for ''unprofessional conduct''. Now the Bruins simply quit on him at the 1st chances they got.......
We're still good to go with MSL.....considering we're not trying to win.

Nobody is really hand picked for the Habs.You have to speak french first and that discounts 99% of any decent coaches.Do you think Hugo would have picked a coach that never coached a game if he had a choice of the best available.Good bilingual coaches do not come along very often.You don't wait till Montgomery leaves for another team then it's back to the recycle bin
