I think comparing Mailloux to Reinbacher is not fair to Mailloux. Reinbacher has a far better pedigree and projection on draft day.

I think a #5 pick should project as a top pair, and a 31st pick should project as a bottom pair, and I think both Reinbacher and Mailloux are on pace to be those things in the future.

He's definitely showing his bottom pairing upside on the regular.

I'm harsh, but I dislike his game as it is. With his size and his physical tools, he should start accepting that his path to the NHL is as a Savard/Kovacevic type player. He won't make it as an mostly offensive D unfortunately.

He was a fine pick after all. I mean I get why almost everyone wanted to add MM, he's a dynamic offensive player or Ryan Leonard a true power forward type of player but honestly I think MTL got the best defenceman of the draft + he's a RD.

Can't ask for more IF he remain healthy.

This is why I don't see him making it. I just can't picture him shifting his play style to something that is the anti-thesis of how he plays. He's basically Leeroy Jenkins incarnate.

This is why I respect David Savard and Alex Carrier. Both were offensive defensemen growing up who changed their game to find a role in the NHL.

I think he realizes it (at least I've heard messaging either from him or the org that seems to recognize it). But I think this is effectively the first year he's really spent focusing on it. Of course he has bad moments doing this, he's still developing. Playing PK for example is a pretty interesting development. I think he still needs at least half a season at the AHL level next year and then could be ready for bottom pairing duties on a more regular basis. As others have said though it may be with another team because I think he's decent trade bait too.
