I’m not betting on him getting out of camp.Smart of the Browns to upgrade their backup QB spot like this. DTR had one great half against training camp cuts in a preseason game two years ago. It made people get far too excited about his potential. Seems like a great dude everyone loves, but he's not even NFL backup material.

I'm not really sure yet what this means, but it does limit their commitment to him.
$22 million isn't very much if a guy is your starter and playing well, but yeah, having to make that call on a guy who hasn't played a down for you is too much to ask. The best case scenario of him looking like a really good NFL QB is also the worst case scenario for their cap because a new contract for a really good QB costs way more than $22 million (the franchise tag will be at least double that).A 5th year option would have been way too expensive given what Pickett has shown to date. $22 mill is what was showing on Spotrac.
That would also be fully guaranteed, so they can't afford to take that risk, not with managing the final 2 years of Watson contract, plus the extra 2 years they will need to figure out after they let him go as there will be a lot of deferred dead cap in 27 and 28 years.
His cap hit for Clev is $2.6 mill in 2025. Less than what guys like Davis Mills signed for.
