Proposal: CLB - MON

Usually these types of deals happen during the draft when a player a team likes begins to fall. However, last year MTL made this same kind of deal before the draft got started:

The Montreal Canadiens acquired a 2024 1st round pick (#21) from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2024 1st round pick (#26), 2024 2nd round pick (#57) and 2024 7th round pick (#198)

According to Puckpedia draft pick calculator thinks CBJ wins this deal:

Fantilli for Beck, 16th overall, 17th overall, 2026 2nd
I'm a Habs fan and I'll say imagine the CLB fans say Demidov for Del Bel Belluz, 14th, 20th and a 2nd 2026. You would rightfully puke.

I would take that with a grain of salt, I think it really depends on which team gets which player. Hopefully it's win win.

Sure, it's possible, but I do not see the CBJ trading those picks in such a manner but rather for roster upgrades. I think 14 will be more valuable to add a roster player than trade back. Certainly nothing happens until pick 13 is taken for a deal like this.

If the goalie is there, I believe we stand pat

This feels like a trade you can't even comment on before teams have had their scouting meetings.

Like broadly speaking the value is reasonable, but teams generally need to get a better idea of who they like and how the draft will break down before making a move like this.

And both teams probably have those picks available for roster players/prospects that better fit their timeline.

What do fans of both teams and neutral fans think of this one ? :

CLB receives :

16th ovr pick
17th ovr pick

MON receives :

14th ovr pick
20th ovr pick

I believe CLB would love to leave the floor with the best goalie available at this year's draft, Joshua Ravensbergen, but the Saint-Louis Blues (SAI) might snag him at 19th, as they haven't drafted one in a while, Binnington is not getting younger and their future isn't that bright at this position. CLB secures the goalie at 17th and pick a guy that might have fallen on their lap anyway at 14, or a good consolation prize.

Meanwhile, MON targets Carbonneau as a very good piece for the future, a good complement for the actual top-6, has size, compete, a shot... and VAN could also snag him from one rank at 15. At 20, MON gets a solid guy as well, maybe a Cole Reschny if they decide to bank on upside, or a faller among Lakovic, Bear, Hensler, or maybe Spence or Fiddler.

Thank you! :)
Very unlikely the Blues take a goalie at 19.

Binnington has plenty of good hockey left, Hofer is a very capable young backup with starter potential and they just re-signed their #3 Colten Ellis to a 2 year contract after a couple very strong years in the AHL. They also have Zherenko in the system who may head back to KHL but they will retain his rights.

The Blues need to draft another goalie(s) in the coming years, but it is not a pressing need.

If SAI drafts him now tho, he will be ready in only several years, so you never know.
