Player Discussion Claude Giroux

Regardless of what Perron is making next year Giroux is not worth over $3 million next year. CG has tailed off badly the in the second half the last 2 years and I doubt he finds the fountain of youth. He needs to be replaced on the first line with a faster, tenacious, shooter and unless the team trades Batherson I see him on the 3rd line with reduced minutes and reduced PK duties.
You're absolutely spot on about needing to replace Giroux with someone with the traits you listed. In a vacuum Giroux isn't worth $3+ million, but no player is signed in an isolated manner. His agent can make a strong and justified case for Giroux getting at least $4 million based off Perron.

Really hope it doesn't come down to Staios letting Giroux walk while keeping Perron who is worth his caphit less than Giroux is worth his.

We definitely need to not re-sign Giroux. He had a good tenure but he weakens our top 6 because he is too old, it's that simple.

If they let Giroux walk because he wants more than 3m .. they would need to sell that to the boys in the room and they would need to back fill with a player that would make that palatable to the players. I'm ok with moving on from Giroux as a business decision but for the sake of 1m say .. that may not fly to well with the team

Realistically, who can they sign that’s a better player that wont kill our books?

50 point centre that kills penalties and wins FOs at 60+ %

Who is that player we can sign for 1 year and 4-5M ?

You sign Giroux and regroup the following year

Brady and Timmy both want him back they made it very clear as well.

How do the old man contracts work? What if he retires during a contract? Could we do 2 years at 3m or 3.5m? That number on the 3rd or 4th line in 2 years wouldn't be terrible with were the cap is going I guess.

All due respect, but Giroux is not holding this team back. He is still a good player, and imo has a role on this team with pk, pp2, spot faceoffs in OT, and regular middle six shifts. Was tied for second on the team in playoff points.

Maybe he’s not slotted in the top line next year, maybe they manage the number of games he plays so he’s still good down the late stretch, and there’s no doubt that he’s not fleet of foot anymore, but it’s not like he was ever a burner or that his success relied on insane speed or skating. His iq and competitiveness/will to battle are still there and that’s what he’s built a career on imo. It will continue to age well. Even with caveats he brings value to this team.

I can’t see the team filling all the little things that he does well on ice (let alone big things off ice) for 3 million or less. I can see a bunch of us fans being super f***ing pissed at mgmt if they let him go. Imagine if he signed elsewhere like Montreal for like 4.5M, and had a similar season to what he just had here and contributed to the successful season of rival. Why not us? He’s worth that for sure. Sure say goodbye if it meant being able to sign Pastrnak or some big ticket player, sure, but that’s f***ing unlikely.

I think performance based contract, an extra year, no move clause for security etc will be what we see, but he still won’t take peanuts to stay. He’s the top faceoff percentage in the league and scored 50+ last season. That’s worth something.

Most definitely a 50 point player, the number one faceoff guy in the NHL is worth more than 3 million.

Giroux was a 45% FO man against the Leafs. In 51 games since January 1st he scored 7 goals. He scored 3 goals in his last 32 games of the previous season. He's in a steady decline and no longer a top 6 player.
Bottom line I'm fine with taking him back in a reduced role as long as it's in the $3 million range and he's replaced on the first line. I honestly think a guy like Zetterlund could score 20 plus goals playing with Timmy and Brady although he's not my first choice.

If re-signing Giroux prevents us from signing an actual top 6 forward, then that's not ok. I'd try to find that elusive top 6 guy first, and if there's money left for Giroux and everything else, then sure you do it. If we lose him in the process, so be it.

People have officially lost their minds.

That's just it. Perron and Giroux are taking a lot of flak, but they were 2 of Ottawas better playoff forwards.

2 veteran middle 6 wingers for 8 million dollars is not a bad thing at all. They're fine depth players. Ottawa will live and die with Batherson, Tkachuk, Stutzle and Cuzins. They need to be better. Those are the star forwards on this team.

Perron has the signed NHL contract at this time. Giroux does not.

I would like to upgrade on both, but we don't have a lot of salary cap dollars to sign two betters forwards.
Not a single player that will give you what Giroux will for $4-5M on the FA market.

I’m not interested in signing 2nd or 3rd tier players for multiple years.

If we can get a true upgrade for go for it but chances are we can’t, which is why the simple not complicated thing to do is run it back and sign Giroux and readjust a year from now when both Perron and Giroux come off the books that will allow us to target a better player compared to what’s available now on the market.

We have no money right now be smart keep the books clean with a 1 year deal and go shopping for better things down the road.

If we trade our first round draft pick for a top 6 forward or RD under contract for a few years, we might not have many salary cap dollars to spend on UFAs and RFAs. We might get lucky in a trade.

You want to pay Giroux $4 million to be a depth player and you mention no new additions. .So who's you first line RW?
And you want to run the team back with basically the same the same lineup so you are fine being a wildcard team?

Well where are these first line RWs lined up and ready to pluck that are head and shoulders better than what we have internally? Like let’s swap out Giroux for Kucherov, why didn’t we just do that 3 years ago.

You can't really think of how the players feel as a GM. Tough decisions have to be made. Also I have a feeling they would get over it pretty quickly. Norris left and Brady didn't throw a fit, these are professionals making millions of dollars.

Brad Marchand, who is twice the player Giroux is at this stage, is playing on Florida's 3rd line.

Those who have Giroux penciled in on the 1st line next year and think that makes us remotely close to a contender are out for lunch.

He's cooked. Let him walk and use the money to go after big, physical players that fit the team's identity and make a difference in the playoffs.

The real reason to keep him here is his vet leadership and experience, not so much his skills which are rapidly declining. This means he has to sign for cheap for it to be worth our while. Ideally that would be around $2-3 million/year but it feels like he'll still want $4+ to stick around, in which case it's "sayonara" for me as well.

You cant have no prospects. It just doesnt work even for the stacked and loaded teams. Thats not an option for this organization as a small market team.

They should re-sign Giroux but not if he wants more than 4 million.
