Player Discussion Claude Giroux

Giroux is too expensive to be a bottom line forward. I don’t see a slot for him, not good enough to be in our top 6, to expensive for the bottom 6

Staois did some great value shopping last summer - Amadio, Gaudette, Gregor. I think he’ll be able to find a good Travis Green type of bottom 6 forwards to replace G for way cheaper.

G isn’t the answer in the top 6 or in the bottom 6. Love him but he’s a a super expensive tweetner right now

And let’s be honest, that “A” belongs to Sanderson

I came to talk about that. I just heard on the Montreal radio that André Roy reported it. He heard from a childhood friend of Giroux that he would like to continue his career in Montreal, which makes sense because it’s close to where he lives with his family.

Close to where he lives with his family? He lives in Kanata, that's like 5 minutes from the CTC.

Maybe he wants to get away from all the crime in Kanata?

if G comes at a good enough price i think that third line winger spot is perfect for him

but you kind of talked about it, it needs to be at the right price. If G is willing to come back under 4 million then i would sign him and see what we can get for Perron. Before people say i am looking to run rookies, i would still want a veteran player to replace perron/g just not one as old

Montreal radio. Lol

That whole post. Lol

People want to focus onpoints is one thing, but as you see in the playoffs, you need more than points. And he still brings a lot of intangibles. The same intangibles that Brady brings, and you pay for, are the intangibles that Giroux brings have to be compensated.

Giroux-Pinto-Perron is a great line for next year

That line might just be too slow as a group,

I didn't find Perron slow during the playoffs. The again he didn't play 82 games but I did not see a big issue with his foot speed. I think if G is a littl behind them , it should hurt them too much

I thought he looked pretty slow tbh. great in tight spaces, great along the boards, but if he was back checking it wasn't happening,

Edit:
Top skating speed in the playoffs,

Perron, 20.49 Mph
Giroux, 21.49 mph

Bursts over 18mph:

Perron, 13
Giroux, 38

By comparison,

Pinto
21.47mph
with 51 bursts over 18 mph

Greig
22.22mph
43 bursts over 18 mph

Cozens
22.13 mph
69 bursts over 18 mph

Stutzle
22.29 mph
91 bursts over 18 mph

Leverage. The team knows he wants to be in Ottawa and are offering less than he wants. So put Montreal as a second option to try to get more money.

I'd give 3M base with 1.5M bonus for performance.. 70point+ etc. If he wants 6M+ again then we are probably better off looking at other longer term options.

We're probably going to have both Perron and Giroux on the team next year, but man am i looking forward to having young speedy offensive talent in the top6 instead of these declining vets.

...and where are those coming from? There are none in the system. Even if, by some miracle, a diamond in the rough is there, it's years away. Please don't hold your breath. That would be bad for your health and we like you.

Yeah, right now our best bet for "Diamond in the Rough" is Halliday, and he's anything but speedy.

Pipe dreams my friend. Fantasy land and day dreaming is all I have given playoff hockey will be over in a few weeks.

Both of them making a combined 8 million is just overkill. They are both declining every year and we already lack speed.

Imo you offer Giroux the job Alfie had with the team as a player development liaison.

The proverbial Reg Dunlop.
He still gets his name on a cup that way if/when we win and he can enjoy his time with his kids

Have that salary not count against the cap AND keep him in the organization

I just hope Giroux stays. If he gets $4 million somewhere else and we keep Perron who's worse than him that'll be a very big L move.
Perron fits the stylistic identity more of what Staios is trying to build. I think he is a better fit at this point. I do think there's only room for 1 of them when you look at the roster construction.

He’s so good along the boards and his footwork is amazing, can probably play for another few years

The Sens still need that vet presence to guide them and Giroux still can compete. His influence in the room is obviously highly respected by the young guys especially. There has to be a win/ win for both sides in order to get the deal done. Definitely a challenge for Staios, but if it is veteran leadership they want...G is the man!

I’d prefer Sidney Crosby tbh

Giroux is one of the best faceoff men in the league and one of the only guys on this team that is a proven PKer.

Unless the demands are exorbidant you re-sign him. Garrioch's suggestion that 3M on a 1 year deal would be enough to re-sign him is probably wishful thinking, but something like 4M for a year, with a decent amount of it being bonus money, seems very reasonable.

People are going to be surprised how badly overpaid a lot of UFAs get this summer. We can do a heck of a lot worse than bringing back Giroux on a 1 year deal.
