Player Discussion Claude Giroux

We can also think of it as he was glued to Stutzle and PP time and only put up 50 points.

He is not a 5 mill player anymore. He was put in the exact role we need to upgrade and we have to use a lot of his money to do it.
It'll be interesting to see what happens .. I think 5 is high personally but I could see 4 being close to a number both sides could live with for 1 year
Giroux is highly respected in the room and does add value there as well.

Yea and highly respected by guys like Staios, Alfie and DJ. Like he's basically more in common with them then the team lol.

Also Giroux is going to be a coach with us one day, probably an assistant to Alfredsson.

They were having a discussion over the white board in the playoffs, discussing tactics and it seemed right.

Easy to see Giroux wanting to coach.

If he was helping Alfie with the powerplay then maybe he’s not such a good choice to coach

3M max for 1 year I might do it otherwise save the money for a bigger body net presence UFA.

Or keep the door open to trade someone like Batherson for a high scoring stud which might mean less money going out but more coming in so the extra cash could come in handy.

I think Giroux only gets a one yr contract & could likely retire with Perron when his contract is up at the end of next season. At that point I expect that Greig & Pinto should both be ready to assume a top six role with Tkachuk, Stutzle, Cozens & Batherson. Wouldn't surprise me either if Giroux & maybe Perron end up in the org after they retire, especially if they are trying to entice the francophone community.

I was thinking the same thing about Hamonic - seems like a natural leader and a total rink rat. I wonder if they find him a job in Ottawa as a D coach for Kleven, Matinpalo and Yak - Hamonic is a RS and two of our up and coming D are RS.

I think zero chance of that, unless it’s that base and some 35+ bonuses.
Question... how do bonuses work against CAP? If the base is 2.5 and there's say 1.5 for scoring <X> points or goals, how does the team work and and stay compliant to the cap?

I think you can go over the cap by a certain amount (7%) ? in a given year for performance bonuses, and also kick the can down the road with the remainder of any salary for performance bonuses to the following year.

After breaking down the sens roster and salary projections next year I really dont know if they can pay him. I think 3.5 million max.

I also dont really see where he fits tbh.

If he can get 4.5 he should chase it, just hope it's not us giving that offer.
I’m not sure we can do any better tbh.

1 year 4.5/5M I would assume is better than paying someone like Grunland for 6 years or w/e.

Have Giroux come back keep the books clean and the following year target a FA in a much deeper class of players that figure to be available.

1 year 3 million. We all complain that Stutzle needs a winger who can finish. 15 goals and 50 points isn't worth much, especially due to the fact that his goal and point totals have been steadily declining during his tenure in Ottawa.

Giroux has slowed down but he still scored 50 points and was solid in the playoffs. Kills penalties, looks good on PP2. Loads of experience, evidently adored in the locker room. Decent package there for a middle 6 winger.

4 to 4.5 is fair considering you can argue that he might regress a bit further. 5 isn't crazy either. Probably closer to 4 on a 2 year deal. Closer to 5 on a 1.

It might be fair but prevents Ottawa from getting another d man. They can probably get a D man and another forward for 2 million that can slide up and down the lineup.

Whatever you might think about his overall production, I don't see who's gonna be that go to faceoff guy if he's gone next year. I think they keep him at least one more as some of the young guys get better.

Those PK or late game faceoffs that are critical to win are his bread and butter. Surely there's a spot on the third line for a guy who can do that reliably.

I think Giroux and Perron are nowhere near retiring after next year. Plenty left in the tank

Just like progression isn't linear, regression isn't either...

But take their production over the last few years and it's definitely painting a trend.

The question is, would you rather in 2 years, have a super slow Perron or Giroux playing 4th line getting 20-25 points playing on pp2...or would you rather will that spot with a young hungry big and fast player?

This is why I think it's a 1 year deal.
